What is your main concern OP? I've never lived beside a brothel, but my sister did whilst at university. She had no issues at all. The only thing she would mention was her amusement at all the very professional looking men who frequented the place. A few men did knock on her door looking for the 'sauna', but there was never any bother.

It's different if the girls are exploited/trafficked/underage etc, but I guess it's hard to know.

Where we used to live, one of the local councillors got into all the local papers for getting a local knocking-shop closed down. It was in a flat in a decent, new block in the middle of the high st.

One of the other councillors turned out to live in the flat next door. First they knew was when they saw it in the paper...

You need to get something like this sorted...

    - think it's a "closure order" (?).

The girls are probably being exploited & could do with any help.

The clue to that brothel being shut lies in the word "school". Parents do not like brothels near any school that their children go to - and will move heaven and earth to shut them down if they find out.

If you've got any schools nearby - find a couple of suitable parents with children there to tell and = Job Done. They will deal with it.

I'd not pre-judge anything and just see how things go. Some working girls are not unhappy with their situation, nor unpleasant people, while others are vulnerable and in very unfortunate circumstances.

Either way, I don't think the OP should prepare to involve himself with any social crusades.
  • Agreed that the women themselves may or may not be happy with their situation.

The question is though what OP thinks of having these brothels near him.

I'm quite capable of a "social crusade" (or three:rotfl:) myself - but wouldnt concern myself from that viewpoint.

Mine would be more of a "ohmygawd - my house value" level I have to admit:rotfl:. I'm too old an agegroup now to be concerned at a personal level - ie fearing I might get propositioned by accident (but that would have been a worry up until about 15 years ago).

Thankfully OP is a man - but it was a valid point that he might get mistaken for a punter (if not a worker) then...

I'd ensure that my place had a sign up, like the house you've mentioned across the road, that says "private residence". That's something that you can do without worrying about communication.

I haven't lived in a red light district, but I have worked in one, Soho, before it was gentrified. In the end I would chat to a few of the prostitutes every day over breakfast... they were finishing for the night and I was about to start for the day. In the main they were very nice. They certainly weren't people I was scared of.

However if you do have issues with communication, then the not making eye contact point is a good one. Just ignore them and walk past. And try to open a conversation with those people in the nice houses that don't have saunas in... if you are able. They will probably have local ideas and coping strategies that could be of use to you.

Most importantly, as Ozzuk says, I hope this has a happy ending for you, too.

ETA... once you've lived there a while, as a man, you may have an advantage. The pros will know you and know that you are not a punter. They will get the hang of that pretty quickly as they see you about. If you were a woman you might get rude comments or men coming up to you, but hopefully that won't happen the other way round. Plus there will be no reason for men to knock on your door if you have a sign up.

Plenty of the kids I went to primary school with were the children of prostitutes. It was a Catholic school and even the priests and nun had a live and let live attitude. I never heard of anyone trying to close the brothels down. When a lot of Muslims moved into the area it was different and they did organise to get things changed. Maybe people are different now or maybe some groups will be more active.

The problem from the police point of view is if they close them down they are just moving the problem, generally areas that are recognised as "vice areas" will cause the police less grief than the areas they might move into. It is an age old problem and not easily solved.
