Genuine question. How can coconut milk be "healthier" than cows milk if my fresh whole milk has 3.6g of fat (2.3g saturated)/100ml whilst the can of Reduced Fat coconut milk comes in at 8.4g of fat (7.5g saturated)/100ml? Presumably the can of "regular" coconut milk would have an even higher fat content. Why are maple syrup, date syrup (and presumably also agave syrup and honey) any "healthier" than sugar produced from sugar cane or beet? They are all "sugar"!

Re the leaning towards veganism that "clean eating" does - then the coconut milk would be instead of cows milk.

By "decent quality" coconut milk - I don't choose the ones with a variety of additives in. I make sure its as additive-free as possible.

I've not got a good enough memory to remember all the arguments as to why processed sugar is a lot worse idea than more "natural" sweetenings. I read enough to think "Right - no sugar and no agave syrup either. What's left?" and hence the real maple syrup, date syrup, etc as sweetenings. Also - I gather fats are being rescued from "bad guy" status and actually now got "good guy" status - but again = my memory being what it is equals I read all the stuff, made up my mind and then forgot what I'd read (ie because it had served its purpose of helping me make up my mind as to what to have/not have).

...and yes....I would agree with NewShadow that people shouldnt feel they have to "justify" the way they do/dont eat. That's their business. I dont ask people why they eat meals of meat and/or general junk food/etc/etc and I dont expect any questions back either - other than "Can I have a taste of that please to try it out?". Maybe that's me feeling a bit offput by the fact that I've had a lot of this sort of questioning and, very often, it's been my experience that it hasnt been a "fact-finding" question. More likely - a "critical" question iyswim.

    Yes, so do I.

My mind is still boggling at the concept of reduced fat coconut milk ;)

I don't know why - it's sold in every major supermarket I've shopped in and is right next to regular coconut milk on the shelf.

I know it is, but I'd never buy it, just like I'd never buy low fat yoghurt.. I try to go for the Chaokoh brand.

Surely even maple syrup must be processed - they don't tap the tree, decant into a bottle and screw a lid on? Dates have to be processed to extract the syrup. Not making any sense to me. They are all processed in some way.

I would suggest it's a result of the fat = bad world view.

From what quick google suggests, the difference between full fat v's reduced fat seems to be the addition of water...
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

    sugar is sugar.

Interested in views rather than making a point (just to be clear)

What are peoples views on the 'quality' of ingredients?

If sugar is sugar - is high fructose corn syrup just sugar?

Are carbs just sugar - and if so are complex carbs any different from refined carbs?

Personally - I eat what I fancy (trying to ensure not too much of the rich stuff).

I have no issues with cheap sausages or fake maple syrup (as long as they taste nice), but think things have gone a little far if you can leave something on the side for a month (or 6) with no discernible change to taste texture or smell (twinkies)

There's usually more sugar in the reduced fat products.

I usually buy the full fat products if possible.

No discernible difference in taste or texture that I've noticed. I only buy it as the full-fat version sends my husband's stomach into spasms - not good when he has a digestive disorder which is already life-limiting. The brand you buy also comes in a reduced fat (light) variant in Tesco's.
