I don't drink when we go out to Open Mic on Thursdays as I'm the driver. On these occasions I drink fizzy water with ice and slice, or a diet coke.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -

At this moment we are sitting in the bar of the restaurant at the hotel on the site where we have our static caravan holiday home. I have had three halves and my husband has had four. The beer is local (Anglesey) and is very pleasant. Could stay here for ever .......
I had lunch here today.

Jeez! I don't think I've drunk cider and black in thirty years. Now I'm ancient, and with a much smaller bladder, I mix prosecco with cassis. Same effect, less volume :beer:0 -
The trouble is if people are buying rounds they know what you are drinking. I remember sitting at a wedding with about a dozen alcoholic drinks in front of me that people "insisted" I had. Well they could buy them but I wasn't going to drink them! I know they didn't mean to be rude but actually it is rude to decide that an adult can't decide for themselves what they want to drink. I was quite popular with a couple of friends who enjoyed my left overs, or should that be rejects?
I did go through a phase where I told people I was actually a recovering alcoholic and please don't offer me drinks. It stopped some but not all which I found quite disturbing.Sell £1500

It's a long time since I heard of anyone giving up anything for Lent. And this is from a (lapsed) Catholic Irish "girl" too!
I always give up alcohol and sugary sweet things for Lent. It's just a tradition and while it drives me (and everyone around me) mad, the respite on Easter Sunday can be fun!
To me it is just a discipline for a few weeks, and then back to debauchery ASAP. :rotfl::rotfl:0 -

Scuse me here... only half a bottle? What happened to the other half?
I love France and its restaurants. Even in the humblest of places the food is treated like it is a god. You lucky thing, and enjoy!

Rock clubs and pubs are probably to answer for that! :rotfl: I used to drink snakebite, but then realised I didn't really like lager, so switched to cider and black nstead lol!
I love cassis, don't think I've tried Prosseco, although I'm sure it would be lovely mixed together!0 -

Yes, self discipline and health are my other two reasons.
When I was a child, everybody gave up something for Lent (usually sweets) and that wasn't in a Catholic setting.0 -

Well now, champagne and creme de cassis (the blackcurrant liqueur) is a Kir Royale.
But I can only do the peasant's version, i.e. white wine and cassis, just your ordinary Kir. But lovely just the same.
And thankfully Lent is over now so I can indulge!!0
