Just read about this on The Guardian website : - http://www.theguardian.com/money/2016/mar/18/banned-by-amazon-returning-faulty-goods-blocked-credit-balance

Seems Amazon are banning more and more customers now for this. Tbh now I'm hesitant myself to purchase anything more from them just in case I need to send it back !

Amazon have always banned those that they feel abuse their returns policy.

He's returned over 10% of his purchases. Clearly Amazon don't agree with his reasons

You said you were going to shop elsewhere in 2014. Change your mind?

I don't think genuine customers have anything to worry about. Anyone who claims that 10% of the goods they received are faulty is either extremely unfortunate or trying to play the system.

If you are still using them despite your worries 2 years ago I suspect like you, most people don't give it a moments thought.

To me is seems like good business, I sell online and block people for all sorts of issues and frankly a buyer wouldn't have to get close to returning 10% of my goods before they were banned by me.

Obviously they are allowed to pick and choose who they want to do business with, but the remainder of the practice - for example you could just purchase the years prime and a week later be banned and they would refuse to refund - would likely be found unfair since the realisation is based on their will alone.

    Gift card balances etc also.

After all, its not like they give you a clear set of circumstances when they will cancel your account and when they won't. So not like they can claim you failed to adhere to the T&C's.

I have no objection to banning people if they return too many goods, but keeping money from gift cards and Prime membership seems very wrong to me.

Why not it is abuse of their system, don't buy from them if you intend returning items without a very good reason, I doubt that over 10% of the goods they sell are faulty.

I have been buying from Amazon for over ten years and out of the hundreds of items I have bought I have only ever needed to return about half a dozen at the most.

    Gift cards wrong

Prime membership right - there is no per use value in the fee - its the same fee if you use it once or 1,000 times.

Most membership schemes are one price regardless of how many times you actually use/access it.

But you'd be paying for 12 months prime (plus the benefits that entails like lovefilm) and wouldn't be receiving what you had paid for. You can't have a contract being binding on only 1 party, it has to be equally binding on both.

Even if the circumstances were outwith the retailers control, they'd still have a liability to return prepayments (just wouldn't be liable for any other damages).

Yes, but if Amazon decide you are taking the proverbial they are within their rights to refuse to sell to you. If I remember correctly there was a guy on MSE who had ordered dozens of high value items over the years returning most of them having had 'a play' with them just because he thought he could with no repercussions. Amazon banned him as a buyer.
