Fun Friday MSE Note: Great thread. Do our How Tight are you? Quiz for a bit of added fun!

Why are some people really tight with money, and don't spend on thing normal people do ?
e.g going out for dinner, buying friends gifts or a card at least, paying their share of a meal with other people, making excuses not to go out or attend a function.
I recall seeing another thread sometime back on MSE Forum about people who say they have no money constantly making moaning about not having any, but in fact they are quite well off or can easily afford everything they need.
I have heard a saying rich people become rich because they don't like spending money.

That saying is right...to stay rich you do not spend money on anything at all.
It's generalizing really but the tight people that I've known have really nice cars. Maybe they are spending too much on the car loan repayments that they genuinely have nothing left.
I've had that before when people ask me for money towards a meal then when I ask for a lift back home (as I drink and can't therefore drive) they also ask for a contribution towards petrol. I mean come on you were going that way anyway. They didn't get invited again.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

They might want to save it. Might not want to go out for a meal at that time. May have bills due. Might be going on holiday and have other things to use their money on.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0

People are different, have different priorities.
If they don't want to spend their money, isn't that up to them as long as they're not harming anyone else?0 -
It does make you wonder sometimes. We all know that person who disappears at the round time in the pub, or itemises the bill when the group has agreed to just split it equally or refuses to contribute anything to anything and claims poverty every five minutes.... But, on facebook the clock countdown displays the days to their 2 weeks in the Maldives, followed by a winter trip to NYC and when they pick up their new car but still they can't find £10 to come to a friends birthday meal.
In my life it really does seem to be the ones with the nicest cars and biggest houses are the tight gits who'd fight over 5p change.
I recently had a friend claim poverty, kept going on how bad it was and how much things cost. They then rocked up in a brand new Merc!!
One of my favourites recently plastered all over facebook and out there for everyone to read. Someone (friend of a friend) was getting married, told her bridesmaids that they had to pay for their own hair and make up and shoes etc due to things being tight. Then she was on FB going on about spending £12k on the wedding venue alone!!! Reading the comments to that post entertained me for awhile lol.0 -
A lot of it comes down to how you were brought up. My parents came from families with little or no money and were extremely cautious and it is only now that they realise that they have enough to let go and spend. I'm glad they reached this point whilst they can enjoy it - buy frivolous antiques because they love looking at them, travel to out of the way places with their own guide and driver. Eating out is still a hurdle, but I'm trying to teach my Dad about Vouchercloud0

Because they don't actually have the money to do those things..
nice to know there are such lovely creatures as you who are clearly well off enough to do those things thinking they are just stingy!!
I shall think of your compassion and understanding when I turn down a meal with my mother or my friend because I don't have the money because the £10 I'd spend would feed my family for 2-3 days!LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
I think we all know a tight fisted git who has a £30K car, and expensive clothes, and a £15K conservatory, and goes on holiday to The Maldives! :rotfl:
I know a couple, and HE is so tight that he makes her tip the coppers out of her purse for her OWN drink in the pub! He earns three times as much as her and dresses in £50 shirts, and drives a 15 registered car, while she dresses in Primark stuff, and drives a '97 Corsa.
He won't marry her either. I mean God forbid he has to share any of his wealth with her.
Oh and he DOES walk out of the pub when it's his round! :mad:cooeeeeeeeee :j :wave:0 -
