Penalty fare - first time ever!!!

I think you'll find that in Alisont's case, as ticket selling facilities were available at his/her departure station, he/she is not in the same position you were in.
One is expected to buy a ticket at the first opportunity, and walking past an open ticket office and boarding a train is clearly not doing that.
There can be a mitigating case if the queue was exceptionally long, but not allowing enough time to buy a ticket before the train's departure is risky.
Yes, I see your point.
The situation at my station has become a bit worse, in that they have removed the permit to travel machine completely (last week), they still have no ticket machine, and last week I couldn't buy a ticket from the conductor because they didn't have a ticket machine.
Despite all this, they still have two large posters plastered on the wall inside the station, warning of the consequences of travelling without buying a ticket first - unbelievable!0 -
Have you paid the fare for the journey you actually took?
Around a month has now passed since you made the journey.0 -

You've asked this question several times, but never once suggested how? All you could do is send them a cheque, in the hope they accepted it. And since they didn't accept either appeal, why are they likely to do so?
You can't just 'buy a ticket' for a journey that happened in the past.
It's not even certain you can 'just pay' the penalty fare, since the time for that has elapsed too.Says James, in my opinion, there's nothing in this world

I'd send them a cheque for the fare and say I consider the matter dealt with.0

Absolute bunch of scumbags.
Best of luck Andy, and good for you for not lying down and taking it.
The ticket machine at my town's station is out of order 2/3rds of the time, which isn't an exaggeration. But they let you buy a ticket when you get into Manchester Victoria if you need to.
Once I actually let behind both my season ticket and my wallet. That was a bad day. I was quite far to work when I realised, and didn't want to go back. The ticket people took some details but let me come back at lunchtime with money borrowed from work. That was quite embarrassing, but I digress.0 -

A bona fide rail industry ombudsman is desperately needed.
It's a disgrace.0 -
I reckon they should have received my latest letter and cheque for the fare by now, so I shall have to wait for their next move.0
