I'm not a gambling woman. And anyway, I was pointing out the sheer strangeness of trying to argue that Scotland shouldn't vote for independence because Scotland won't get into the EU. When the alternative is to be out of the EU anyway ? It's such a head scratching argument that it cannot be a serious one. :o

If I was to put money on it, roughly I'd go for a vote in late 2018/early 2019 and if it's a Yes.. and a transitional EFTA deal while independence and Brexit technicalities are sorted out. A safe harbour if you like and an interim/pragmatic best of both worlds till the shocks pass and the details are ironed out for a few years.

The economic campaign for an indy side will most likely be based on staying the Single Market in the immediate future, not the EU. Sturgeon has suggested it already by asking May to put an alternative deal forward for Scotland so is obviously willing, even if reluctantly, to concede full EU membership if it means staying in the Single Market by some means. I'd be willing to bet this would also include putting EFTA forward if it potentially could make for an easier independence win as a means to stay in the Single Market.

It's far from a head scratcher, out of the EU but not in the UK or out of the EU and in the UK. Clearly you are a gambling woman because voting for independence is the biggest gamble you will ever take given the importance of the UK market and the insignificance of the EU single market to Scotland.

I don't know why they use twitter to air their feelings about the leader of their party.

Scotland should be offered another independence ref date...outside the Brexit window.

If they turned this down, PM May could then blame any disruptions in EU negotiations on Sturgeon, who let's be honest is a disruptive type anyway.

I think this would only strengthen the Conservatives down in England. It's an opportunity to sink Labour for a decade or more.

That is a brilliant idea. They might actually have to deal with the normal process of government while they wait then.

    Look at the fundamentals.

We are set for a long period of continued austerity, if we want to even get close to addressing the debt.

Places like Sunderland will face the big hits, and if they see frippery like free higher education and prescriptions in Scotland, and are told they get more funding, it's a sure fire vote winner.

UKIP spotted how easy it was to pick up discontented voters in parts of the UK. The Tories want those votes back. Corbyn has no chance; he's a London only type.

Scottish Labour is in twitter meltdown tonight though..
It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?

You're not thinking this through. There are going to be disruptions anyway, the EU as well as everyone else are able to follow polling trends and what Sturgeon has indicated she will in do in the event of Scotland taken out of the Single Market.

Every point and issue the UK negotiate on is going to be punctuated with the fact there's a 50/50 chance Scotland might be independent shortly after the UK leaves and taken into account anyway. It might actually be better just to get the vote over and done with earlier ? And to be absolutely honest, if May was to say 'have your ref, but wait until after the UK leaves'.. what's to stop her afterwards saying 'actually no, lets just forget about that ref/Scots don't want it/too divisive at this moment in time/wait a few years/blah blah. Oh and lets just dismantle Holyrood a step at a time also. No EU court for Holyrood to go to either.

Sturgeon would be the biggest fool on the planet to fall for those old chestnut promises from the Tory party. And whatever you think of Sturgeon she's certainly no fool.

At least Salmond had a bit of warmth and charisma.

I don't know anyone down here who has time for Sturgeon.

She's in prime position to be painted up to be the villain of the piece.

Let's wait and see, shall we.

I think there could be a return of English nationalism, it just needs something to ignite it.
