On a slightly more serious note, wise words from Theresa May
I can't help but feel that the SNP has a tunnel vision about independence. Actually I think what people want is for the SNP government to get on with dealing with the issues they want to see addressed on a day to day basis. " "Issues like the state of the economy, reforming schools - education used to be such a great flagship for Scotland, but sadly in recent years we have seen that deteriorating.

The PM just echoing the concerns of many Scots weary with the SNPs`s independence fixation and their growing concern with facets of Sturgeon`s stewardship of Scotland.

One thing is for sure regardless what you call the Conservative Party back in the 50s they were getting votes, whereas the SNP weren't and with a bit of luck we will return to that position in the very near future.

If you wanted to be uber-pedantic you could argue that there isn't a Conservative Party anywhere in the UK any more.

Basically the Liberal Party split in 1886 over the issue of Irish Home Rule, the anti-home rule mob walked away and formed the Liberal Unionist Party, which supported Conservative governments, and which later in 1912 merged with the Conservative Party to form the Conservative and Unionist Party.

It remains the Conservative and Unionist Party to this day.

As it happens, post 1886 the "two Parties had come to operate in practice as two wings of a single entity, known generally as the Unionist Party". Thus electors at the time were often faced with the choice between a Unionist candidate or a Liberal one.

    http://blogs.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/archivesandmanuscripts/2012/05/11/a-century-ago-this-week-the-formation-of-the-conservative-and-unionist-party/

Post WWI, or indeed post 1921 (when the Unionist cause was lost), the Conservative and Unionist Party reverted to calling themselves 'Conservatives' , except in Scotland, where they decided to carry on being 'Unionists' at least until 1965. Why this matters, I don't know. They all accepted the Conservative whip when (and if) they got elected. Which is what matters.

Over the years, there have been a number of examples of individuals standing for election under various different labels, for sundry parties, who have ended up supporting some party with a different name once elected.

Even today we have the Co-operative Party, whose leader is one Gareth Richard Thomas, the MP for Harrow West. Since the Co-operative Party has a long running pact with the Labour Party, no one takes any notice of the fact that its candidates stand under various labels, and consider them to be 'Labour'.

Interesting data on political party funding:

For a party supposedly having so much support and with Indy-ref 2 coming up, you'd think the SNP would have more donors.

Don't panic Rinoa, the SNP gets £1.2 million a year in Short money from Parliament alone. Plus they'll get of the order of £400k in the Scottish Parliament equivalent.

Salmond on This Week last night.

He reckoned the indy ref will be pushed through for Sept next year.

Portillo reckons the EU negotiations will still be up in the air at that point, making it difficult to work out what Brexit really means. I think he is right.
