Scotland wasn’t colonised by the English, it entered into the Union of its own free will and is free to leave when it wants. Who do you think we are Spain or summat?
Scotland gets more money because it’s got the British establishment scared witless it might leave. The subsidy is pitched just at the level that makes independence nigh on impossible to contemplate for most Scots.
As an aside, no wonder Brexit was so roundly rejected by the affluent Scots yet embraced by the poor old austerity blighted English.
For every ying there’s always a yang.

The Act of union in 1707 came about in part because Scotland wanted part of Englands growing wealth. Same reason then as always.

The Scottish gentry wanted to be as rich as their English counterparts and a vote for the Union in the Scottish Parliament ensued.
There’s been two referendums on Scottish independence in my lifetime, when they want one, they get one.

Are you interfering to the referendum in 1979?

That would be the one where by putting a threshold in, even dead voters counted as No. Disgraceful.

Scotland has no constitutional recourse to unilaterally exit the UK. It has (far too many) MPs in the UK parliament, and a devolved regional government which has power over some things and not over others. If the UK parliament (of which Scottish MPs are a part) approves secession then Scotland could be set up as a "new" country.

I don't think the failure to understand this is really helping Nats win their cause. Whether Shakey et al like it or not, they are British legally, especially the moment they step outside the UK (and I know how angry ex-pat Scots overseas can get over this).
Oh right. Scotland has no constitutional recourse ? Why's that then ? I think you're in for a bit of a wake up call to be honest. Any move Strugeon makes now isn't for the UK parliament to allow or disallow anything. It's for the EU and R of the World's benefit. She's done an excellent job so far in presenting herself, her party and her country as a rational sensible and trustworthy voice of clarity in this whole awful Brexit mess.

The Tory party on the other hand.... Oh dear. Anyway, referendum legislation and the powers to hold one will be written into Scottish law over the next few months starting next week. Looking forward to Boris Johnson or whatever rabid right winger the Tories install next challenging it via the courts - when indy support, ( entirely down to said rabid right winger ), surges permanently above 55% in total horror. Take that to the bank.
I'm not personally averse to Scotland being independent. I don't see many values I consider appealing in the braying right-wing public school boy privilege England keeps electing to run the UK. I would like to be independent from them too.

I just don't really like any of the Scottish nationalists I have met in person. They seem to be angry, bitter, and if they've had a few drinks, rather scary to be around if you are English. And I don't think they should just have endless referendums after the one they had a few years ago, which was free, fair, and they agreed to stick to, just because they don't like the result of the last one.
What an awful stereotypical insulting couple of sentences. No wonder the SNP/Yes is surging at the moment if this is how 45-49% of the Scottish electorate is viewed. I'm cringing for you that you actually took the time to type the above and post it publically. Toe curling.
It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?
