Any reason you can think of why Scotland couldn't use a 'Scottish pound' the way the Danes use the Krone or Switzerland the Swiss franc ?

Why must Scotland use the Euro ?

Swiss economy is self funding. Runs at a surplus. Likewise Denmark.

Stability. A wildly flutuating exchange rate would be uncomfortable to manage.

    Hmm, measured you say?

Care to give us any of these measurements in time form?

What about transition windows. How long?

I know your success with predictions in the past has been less than stellar, but hey, no reason not to try a few more :D
Not my prediction at all. Do I need to spoon feed you ? They're in the Growth Commisson Report which was released last year ? The SNP are proposing to much shorten the recommended transition period that Andrew Wilson and his team put forward ( which was 10 years/indeterminate ).

No one really knows though do they if everyone is being honest. Because no one knows what the first elected Govt of an independent Scotland will look like ( though unlikely to be anything to the rightwing/Tory ) and what manifesto they'll be elected on.

Meantime the SNP need an answer to give on the 'currency question'. Well now they have one. A new currency, but not right away.
For quite a while now, as I’ve been going around Scotland giving talks on independence, I’ve joked that whereas we were told in 2014 that Scotland couldn’t use the pound, the scare story that Better Together Mk II is going to use the next time round is that Scotland has to use the pound.

And so it has come to pass. Opponents of independence are now quite literally one of my jokes.

It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?

You were saying Scotland would have to join the Euro though. I was just asking why seeing as countries like Denmark and Switzerland don't. What makes Scotland any different ?

Is there a reason why Scotland wouldn't have to join the euro like any other accession country.

    There's three reasons.

    1) Scotland will be out of the EU ( and probably for a while ).

    2) in any case even if Scotland were granted a super duper fast return to the EU :- Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Sweden don't use the Euro. Still EU members though. I can't imagine, especially after Brexit the EU 'forcing' any member to adopt the Euro if they don't wish to.

    3) An independent Scotland would most likely start out looking to join EFTA/EEA. It gives the Scottish Govt full control over Scottish fishing waters and agriculture ( the CFP/CAP is something the SNP have always been against ). As well of course, full control of everything else. No Euro needed.

Does this answer your question fully ? Or are there any points you're not clear on ? I know there's a tendency when Scotland in the EU is mentioned to trot out the same old 'but you'll be forced to use the Euro' thing. But it's really time that particular nonsense was put to bed. Other options out there.

So please explain to us how Scotland will join the EU without accepting the two things that they are against.

You really haven't thought this through, have you?

Of course I have. Because unlike you, I know the difference between making the case for independence and party/govt policies of an independent Scotland afterwards.

Scotland isn't going to be in the EU to start with. Making the case for independence in the next few months the SNP will be offering EFTA/EEA with a vote sometime down the line on re-joining the EU.

After independence, it'll be up to Scots voters to decide which suits them best via elections and a host of new political parties. They might not like the idea of the EU anymore, or might want to rejoin asap. Who knows. But you need to start differentiating between attaining independence itself, and party policies afterwards. They are very different things.

The SNP are opening the door sure, but they're very likely to be firmly shoved aside afterwards as we all pile through. I think you must be assuming the SNP in power forever. Not happening is it and you need to factor that in when assuming Scotland's future direction.

Doesn't this seem at odds with Nicola's claim for Scotland to be at the heart of Europe though?

I do think you need to nail the colours to the mast.

The EU budget had a social cohesion fund running into hundreds of millions of Euros. The smart play from Nicola would be to try and attract some of that money for inward investment.

SNP to vote on backing four-day working week

That will work well attracting inward investment and setting up a currency!

Since 1999 (I think), when the euro began, all new eu members have had to commit to joining the euro. It is in the Articles of Accession.
