people don't need newspapers to tell us that people who have asthma (like my DH) cant get a flu vaccination until November because it has run out.

Is that actually true? Genuinely interested

We live in Edinburgh, my son (at secondary school - also with asthma) was sent a letter by our GP to come in for a flu vaccination, & had it last saturday, approx. 1 week after the letter.

Seems strange that GPS in Edinburgh can get the vaccination, but those in West Lothian cant?

Transport minister Derek Mackay said: “The Scottish Government wants to see more people choose to leave their car at home and make use of public transport.
“That is why we are investing a record £5 billion in our rail network, including significant improvements to rolling stock, to ensure that infrastructure keeps pace with demand and that Scotland’s rail passengers are offered the very best value for money.

“When completed, this major train improvement programme will mean that 75% of trains on our railways are either brand new or newly-refurbished, meaning all passengers across the network will have access to more modern, comfortable and accessible trains.”

ScotRail to dump human waste on Scotland’s railway lines againThe foul practice had ended last year but will soon happen again
So glad we are moving forward.

Interesting income tax conundrum Hammond has set for Sturgeon and Mackay to sort out.

I thought that Scotland was granted powers in order to manage their own economy (better). Given prescriptiuons and University tution are free (for example). At an average £248 per person per annum (£1.3 billion 2017-18). Prescriptions don't come cheap to fund. Ageing population will compound the challenge.

No doubt the same old austerity lines will be rolled out. Someone has to pay though. Easy for politicians to make manifest pledges. Rarely are they around though when the mess needs sweeping up. Be against their principles to admit they got something wrong.

    Her cunning plans aren't working.

Care to name a few where your Sainted Nicola's plans have worked out in the past? Indy Ref 1 was a glorious success was it?

That's an impressive achievement considering that thanks to generous UK Treasury funding arrangements, Scotland has pretty much escaped the excesses of the Tory austerity agenda that England has had to endure. Scotland is apparently responsible for 30% of the UK's total deficit now. Again quite impressive when Scotland has only 8% of the UK's total population.
Scotland continues do well out of the Union. :)

The raising of the personal allowance has taken a chunk of revenue away but will be adopted as that is a manifesto pledge and panders to the SNP voting demographic anyway. That is going to have to be pulled back from somewhere so the "rich" are going to get stung once again. Come to Scotland, free prescriptions and free hospital parking but you are going to pay an extra £1K income tax and higher council tax if you want to live in anything more than a rabbit hutch - a tough sell !

Fewer "rich" people to tap up isn't there? Hence the redistribution from the rest of the country.

He had a letter telling him to come in on a Saturday at the beginning of October.

He didn't make that day so tried to make another appointment for the vaccination
. He was told that he would have to come back in November.

You must be both blind and deaf to have missed the evidence of the failings of this SNP government.

Right so a few sensationalist quotes from SNP hating newspapers, one from three years ago. Derek Mackay hasn't been Transport for quite some time.
Why not produce some real evidence for a change. The Scottish NHS is doing far better than all it's UK counterparts. So you can chew on that for a while. Come back when you've read the report.
A new report by the Nuffield Trust has claimed that the UK could learn lessons from Scotland’s unique system for improving the quality and safety of patient care.
Learning from Scotland’s NHS, written by Mark Dayan and Nigel Edwards, is the first in a new series from the trust looking at each of the four health services of the UK in a detailed and qualitative way.
    http://www.healthbusinessuk.net/news/05072017/uk-can-learn-scotland%E2%80%99s-nhs

The English/Welsh and NI NHS's are lagging behind in comparison in most areas. Something the likes of the Scotsman ( which will fold soon as it's lost most of it's readership ) , the Daily Record and BBC will never admit to.

As for the tax 'conundrum' there is none. It's not a competition and if you don't take income tax in isolation.. residents of Scotland get far more bang for their buck when it comes to day to day lives ie prescriptions, tuition fees, personal care etc etc. Most don't mind paying a hardly noticeable extra for that. Especially when the NHS in Scotland is SO much better than elsewhere in the UK, and our kids don't rack up 30k's worth of debt going to Uni.
Scotland is apparently responsible for 30% of the UK's total deficit now. Again quite impressive when Scotland has only 8% of the UK's total population.
Do people here really believe nonsense like this ? I thought this board was supposed to have people who know a bit about economics about ? Obviously not if ( again ) evidence free pearls of wisdom like this are being taken as gospel. My goodness standards have fallen far since I started posting here a few years ago.
It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?

Even in England the over 60s get free prescriptions. The challenge has always existed.

Now that the nice Mr Hammond has engaged reverse thrust, the Barnett Squeeze has returned. Independence would simply ensure that the squeeze would be implemented immediately - £8 billion plus in year one to find.

    And a good thing too.

Sturgeon, give me back my billions.:)
