Yikes indeed hbs, have you had any luck job hunting?

I have a major work related upheaval coming up, in that our employer is trying to sell the business. Some of us have got together and are looking into whether we can make an offer. It's all scary numbers and scary levels of financial committment, way more scary than a mortgage! That's without even thinking about things like the business plan we need to write, a shareholder agreement and all sorts of other stuff before we can think about approaching a bank to ask to borrow huge amounts of money.. Not going to be able to hide behind my computer and quietly wrote code like usual through this one :rotfl:

This  doesn't really do the level of scariness justice!

That sounds exciting, Ono! Being 'self-employed' can be scary, but can be very rewarding!

Just one thought that needs thrashing out. Why is your employer wanting to sell the business?

Secondly, would it be run by 'committee', or would one person be in overall charge? If the former, are you all like-minded, and all have similar ideas of how it should be run? It might be useful if each individual has a designated role, and the ability to perform that role to the satisfaction of the others.

As you say, lots and lots of things to be thrashed out, but could be really good! It would pay to pay for advice.........accountants to once-over the books, etc , solicitors for the ownership division, and to spell out what is expected of everyone. The last thing you want is someone not pulling their weight and expecting a free ride/time off whenever they fancy it etc.
All that before you actually make a decision!

    Good luck! :T

As for me, once again I'm stuck at the airport for ages. We had to get here early as there were four other flights that people were on, and mine was due to leave at 12.30. Got here at 8.30. Then had to wait two hours before the bag drop opened! Grrrrrrr! Then told the plane is delayed an hour, which probably means it will be longer still. Grrrrrr.

So I have been here three hours and have at least another two-three hours here. Sigh.
The only 'good' thing is that as I haven't been feeling too good all week, When I checked in online yesterday, I decide to upgrade the return flight, so at least I have a comfy sofa to sit on and 'free' snacks and drinks. As usual on these holidays, I've hardly spent anything......almost all meals were included, and we haven't gone anywhere except once into the nearest town, and the two village shops didn't sell anything I wanted except some chestnut liqueur and chestnut jam, so apart from that, some postcards and a few drinks, and the entry to the caves, I've not spent anything! That's my excuse anyway! :D

Ono, that sounds terrifying! No luck on the job front so far, but my payout was OK so going to have a breather for the rest of the week and try for some temp work after that :)

Good Luck,, HBS, and enjoy your rest!

    Ooh! Must tell you!

On the way to the airport, we passed a town that had a load of telegraph poles alongside the road, and atop each pole was a stork's nest with a stork either siting or standing on it! Unfortunately, neither my phone or iPad was accessible to take a quick photo, but it was an interesting sight! :)
There must have been eight or nine!

Yey! Yey! Yey! (Does a little happy dance!)

I have just said eu nãu estou una tartaruga! :j :j :j
(I am not a turtle in Portuguese!)(I hope!)

I decided to try to say it to the poor unsuspecting lady clearing away the used crockery in the lounge here......remember I'm at Faro airport which is in Portugal! Thought I'd keep my record up!

Anyway, she spoke no English or Spanish or Italian, but I just said it to her in what must be an awful accent! She agreed that I wasn't a turtle, luckily, but of course, I was trying to mime that it was joke and failed dismally! So the funny look she gave me was probably justified! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

    But yey go me! :rotfl:

Good morning everyone! (Oooh, it's afternoon already. good afternoon!) Thank you, WaS, faerie and MU, for really useful posts.

Well, I have had a truly horrible morning, but I have decided to categorise it as a Good Experience and a Good Thing, and to tell you all about it in case it helps anyone else.

I got pulled over by a policeman, who said the car had been flagged up as having no insurance. WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh god, me of the really terrible memory. What had happened was that I bought the car new last year and was offered really good insurance really cheap by Mercedes. Then, at renewal, Merc sent me a truly ridiculous figure, so I shopped around, got the best deal...... and then totally forgot to actually confirm it. So when I rang my normal insurers (and I think the really nice policeman was actually impressed that the dear little family firm actually remember me and Mr JM, and chatted away like old friends) there was nothing at all on file, and I really wasn't insured :(

So (as my car had been registered by a cop who apparently is paid to drive around all day looking for car numbers, and his computer then tells him who is uninsured) my car has been taken away, and I have to go and get it back from the pound once my new cover note comes through. And I could be taken to court :eeek:

I'm actually not too worried about the last thing (at the moment!) because I honestly do feel innocent, it was genuinely just a very stupid memory lapse and I am confident that any court would believe this. And yes, I do know how serious, which is why in my heart I am really happy to have been 'caught' by a very nice policeman (who even gave me a lift home) rather than to have discovered this after an accident which could have had very serious consequences. So if ANYONE out there has a memory like mine, and there is any risk that your car isn't insured, or is due for renewal and you might forget, DO IT NOW!!!!!

JM, it's not just a memory loss.

For years I've been using a broker, who's got me good deals.
One year, before I was on the internet for things like this, I renewed automatically as usual, (it's all done by direct debit etc.), but a week or so after renewal, the insurance broker rang me and said that they'd had to give me another insurance, as the the original one had gone bust or something, so for a week I'd been driving without valid insurance!:eek::eek:

I was horrified! Obviously, it wasn't my fault or memory lapse or anything, but technically it was still down to me to ensure I had insurance, so God knows what would have happened if I'd had an accident or been stopped by the police! It would have been a horrid knot to untangle!

Well done everyone for managing to bring up not being a turtle in conversation, hopefully the turtles will be in Argostoli again this year so it'll be easyish for me to say (reminds me, I still haven't googled how...)

HBS and Ono - they both sound like very scary work things but good luck and I hope all works out well.

Pyxis - there's no need to make an excuse, as long as you're not getting yourself into silly debt then you can justify making your trip home more comfortable. Just make sure you take full advantage of the 'free' snacks.

WaS - I hope WaSp is feeling better now.

JM - That sounds like a horrendous morning, hopefully the day will improve!! On a positive note, you've reminded me that I needed to sort out contents and holiday insurance today so thank you!!

I had a good weekend but am absolutely shattered now. OH's family were getting to ours about lunchtime on Saturday and I'd managed to bake a cake, do some shopping, clean the kitchen and have a lazy bath before they arrived!! It was then pretty much non-stop running around after kids until they went home at about 11am yesterday. Fortunately we had pretty good weather though so were able to keep them amused at the beach a lot of the time and then it was really cloudy yesterday so I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything by working.

I think the highlight of my weekend was probably getting an insurance spam caller to hang up on me though. After she'd said "We heard you was in a car accident which wasn't your fault. Is that correct?" my response was "No, neither factually nor grammatically." She put the phone down very quickly. :D

Hugs and squishes to all who need them and I hope you're all managing to stay dry in the pouring sog.

Oh JM :( I've forgotten with road tax in the past, which is annoying enough, fortunately never with insurance.

Well done on all the non-turtles! Welcome home Pyxis!

Big hugs HBS, something will come up.

That is exciting ono! Scary, but exciting!

you sound like you need a Bank Holiday to recover from your Bank Holiday, Izadora!

Big hugs for you too JM! That happened to WaSp years ago, he had all of my medication in the back of car as I had ran out and was in withdrawal because they hadn't previously had any in stock so WaSp had gone to a pharmacist miles away with no idea that he hadn't confirmed his insurance that had ran out five days earlier. He explained to the very nice policeman that I needed this immediately, the policeman then checked the medication bag and said to him that he was going away for 10 minutes, if he could find his car on the road anywhere in the area after that he was taking it and told him to disappear. Luckily, we had a drive so as soon as WaSp got home it was off the road and he had insurance within an hour. He did go to court and get a fine but it wasn't too bad because he had a previously completely clean record. These things happen, the court should understand that. What a horrid experience for you though.

Hi guys.. not feeling too good.. feeling the full force of the Mother pain today.. I always struggle with bank holidays, I'm feeling empty and lonely, and I haven't been getting on with my close male friend for a long time.. ironically, when he lived in london and was an alcoholic, we were so close, but in the year an a half since he moved back here, he's been so distant with me., sees so critical, angry and dismissive of me these days..I can count on 1 hand the times I've felt close to him. He upset me yesterday, he said no more people pleasing for him.. which is fair enough, but he also said mr nice guy has gone.. he said that he regretted paying for the swimming membership for me, and that he will never help me again, finantially or emotionally.so now I feel guitlty, as well as very vulnerable..He did make me feel a bit of security, but he obviously doesn't want to be close any more, and it hurts. I miss the world that we inhabited.I've had to force myself to get used to speaking to him once a week, instead of every night .. I never call him any more, .. but I miss him, I miss the friendship we had for 25 year
The other thing that hurt was that he's been abroad to visit a friend who I used to be close to, she went through a horrific thing.. he dad was killed, but he said that her trauma was so much worse than all of my traumas put together, including the SA from my mum.. .I felt like in that one sentance, he belittled my struggles. . What she went through was unimaginable.. but she is healthy and happy, with 3 kids, a husband and a career, and the trauma doesn't limit her.

I admit that I am really jealous of her life, and I had to cut contact with her as it everything I ever wanted from life. and it was such a painful reminder of my living grief.
No family really sucks.. as does illness, disability and poverty... everything is so painful and exhausting.. and the Mother pain is really weighing me down the last couple of days.Sorry to have a moan, I'm sure it will pass.
Many thanks to all who contribute on MSE :)
