The biggest question for me though is how did Whirlpool come to this conclusion when Hotpoint hadn't noticed over a period of 11.5 years???????????
Because the majority probably were not reported back to them by Fire, Insurance or the owners.

This probably got triggered by some local hack looking into a fire caused by a drier trawling through other reports and putting together the picture that certain models were complicit in a number of fires.

Or to put it another way, there have been 74,200 incidents.

Which doesn't seem quite as low.

    Wrong yet again.

My maths puts that at 742 incidents of fire over the 11.5 years, I don't call 742 fires trivial and those figures are probably underestimated.

Hang on, before the dramatisation kicks in; it says "incidents" not "fires". An incident has not been defined yet but I'm assuming that could be anything from a burning smell to full on fire - it certainly doesn't say "fires" so let's not get carried away with ourselves here.

    Based on your maths;

    742 incidents over 11.5 years = 64 per year

    5.3 million sold

You can dress it up how you like, yes 742 sounds like a lot without any context, but 742 out of 5.3 million sold isn't that significant in my book. Certainly not to the extent that some people on here are making it out to be.

Thank you - after reading the tip in the weekly email, I contacted Hotpoint. I raised my concerns over the length of the wait and the possibility of invalidating my house insurance in the event of a fire caused by using something I know is a potential fire risk.
I have been contacted and advised my repair, initially scheduled for December, is now scheduled to take place next Tuesday.

So from their email they churned out 5.3 million defective tumble driers over a period of 11.5 years. When Whirlpool acquired the company they miraculously discovered that there had been an incident rate of 0.014%.

Or to put it another way, you are wrong. Do the maths again. Even at a glance you are wrong.

Fair point, don't attempt to do maths first thing in the morning.
  • I wanted to warn everyone that has had a replacement dryer to double check the serial number.

We accepted a replacement dryer as long as it was like for like (which it wasn't) and when double checking, because no green stickers etc were visible, we found that the brand new replacement dryer was faulty!

Hotpoint wouldn't accept our word for it and had to send an engineer out to confirm, which took about 5 minutes.

We're still waiting to hear back because I don't want Whirlpool products anywhere near my house and family.

Crikey, now who's making up stories.

It's unbelievable to think that a certain amout of the fires didn't get back to them over the years. It's also unbelievable that didn't monitor machines that they made.

With all the gullible people in this world it's easy to see how that thought they'd get away with it though.

These so called incidents must have been significant to start a multi million repair programme.

The fact that they made 5.3 million doesn't come into it, they are admitting to 742 possible life threatening incidents that they could of caused.

No they are admitting to 742 incidents involving tumble driers, Whether they were life threatening (apart from the already documented cases) is purely conjecture, there is no evidence either way.

They are admitting to 742 incidents and anyone of them could have been life threatening.
