MSE News: Hotpoint tumble dryer help: 3 extra tricks to get you a refund

I didn't have an issue. I contacted Hotpoint in November, they replied straight away and said they would be in touch within 5 weeks. They got back to me just before Christmas and said they would contact me again in 1 week to let me know when they were coming to replace my tumble dryer. My new dryer was delivered the first week in January.
Don't understand why some people are having an engineer to visit, it was never even suggested in my case and my dryer was relatively new, only had it 2 years.
Really pleased with the service I received.0 -
Which is totally unacceptable given the possible risk involved in using something purchased in good faith and not even a year old.
As much as the word "unacceptable" is thrown around on here; it obviously is acceptable else the likes of Trading Standards would be in uproar etc...Nobody should be expected to have their consumer rights trounced because of a repair programme that is proving to be a complete shambles and in the case of newer machines still under warranty a replacement should be a no brainer.
A warranty is also just that; a warranty. It's not a legal right or an entitlement and you're bound by whatever the manufacturer says. Just because you're "in warranty" doesn't mean anything really, and it's the same regardless of manufacturer.
Saying that though, I thought Hotpoint did replace machines less than 1 year old FOC anyway? Or has that now been stopped?0 -
I'm sure we don't need another debate on this, the figures have already been published and the "possible risk" is very much indeed a "possible risk", in fact the numbers would indicate a very insignificant risk in my opinion. But I fully respect everyone is entitle to make up their own minds.

I don't see that happening anywhere. Obviously Hotpoint offer the repair program regardless if your machine is affected, your 'consumer rights' generally sit with the retailer, which in most cases isn't Hotpoint. So not sure I understand your point?

I'm trying not to get involved again so please stop with the Hotpoint worshipping. You may think the risks are insignificant but others are concerned and I feel they have a right to be.
Sorry Zandoni, but "Hotpoint worshipping" really?
I completely understand "others are concerned", and I've just said that everyone is entitle to their own opinion. But the truth of the matter is that the risks are very low - the figures clearly show that.
I think it's important that people looking at this thread at least have the facts and figures (well at least the information we've been supplied so far) and can make their own minds up - rather the just seeing page after page of Hotpoint slating and people over exaggerating the risk and panicking.0 -
I had my Indesit IDV75 modified today. 2 guys came and took it to bits (literally), cleared out fluff with a hoover and a paintbrush, and then put it all back together with a new back plate. Took about an hour. Lucky weather was sunny and dry as this was all done on my drive (drier is in a garage) - not sure what they'd have done had it been pouring down!0

I am concerned that some people may listen to you and then go on to have a fire, that old saying better safe than sorry is the way to go.0 -
Yes Hotpoint worshipping.
I am concerned that some people may listen to you and then go on to have a fire, that old saying better safe than sorry is the way to go.
I'm sorry, but I absolutely refute the "Hotpoint worshipping" accusation.
I've never said people shouldn't get their machines modified or replaced - I've simply said people should take a step back and assess the risk and approach the situation logically.
I know you clearly disagree with me, but there are far too many people on this thread (and indeed the old thread) who simply completely blow this entire thing out of proportion - and this then results in them being worse off, either because they're locked in a bitter argument with Hotpoint or panicking etc...
Personally, I don't want people reading this thread and launching into mass hysteria when they read posts such as;I have been arguing with AO/Indesit/Hotpoint for weeks now as my machine was only 3 months old when we were notified of the fault. Ironically I bought it to replace a working 12 year old Servis in case it let me down! A lot of research went into the purchase and I chose it because it was simple to use and B rated where most are C. Three months later and we had no appointment to fix it. Called AO and they were refusing to do anything and confirmed in writing that they would do nothing as Trading Standards are happy that the repair programme is satisfactory. So any request for replacement was refused outright. I asked them to expand on “unattended” and does it include going down the garden and they said I would have to ask Whirlpool. I called Whirlpool and they were adamant that they will not replace machines even for the elderly and infirm but I gave them what for especially when they confirmed that technically going upstairs or out into the garden is “leaving it unattended”. Of course they referred me back to AO! I told them I was frightened to use it and worried that my insurance would be void if I did have a fire and had knowingly continued to use it. I pinned them down to an appointment for an engineer to call the following Monday between 10 and 6 so at least I got something out of them.
Reading that you'd think the machine was to spontaneously combust at any moment - and that just simply isn't the case, it's just a classic example of overreaction and you know what, I'd bet if that poster had sent a letter to Hotpoint/AO and approached the situation calmly he/she would have gotten what they wanted without the "arguing with AO/Indesit/Hotpoint for weeks now".
Rotti - sorry to single you out in the above quote, it was simply the best example I could find without having to troll through the old thread.0 -

I'm not sure how Zandoni feels about this, but me personally, no I won't take my "discussions" elsewhere. This thread is to discuss the recall and that's exactly what's being done.
Perhaps if MSE hadn't closed the old huge thread down in favour of this one then we'd still have somewhere to discuss the ins and outs, but since they did; this is the only thread where these things can be discussed.
I'm yet to see anybodies post get "buried" and actually I'd go as far as to say that both myself and Zandoni between us (including on the old thread) have contributed advice to people for months in-between our debates and are often the ones keeping the thread itself from being buried when the actual posts regarding recall questions are few and far between.Post directed at Zandoni and AJXX -Can you PLEASE take your "discussions" elsewhere??
I'm not sure why you felt the need to waste space on the page by quoting this and then simply adding
Ironically a very pointless contribution from someone moaning about other people.0 -

Although the risk is small it shouldn't be ignored, you didn't ignore it yourself you wrote a letter to get a quicker repair.
My advice is do not leave machines unattended for one moment and do all you can to get a speedy service from Hotpoint.0 -

The retailer in my case, AO, most certainly were not prepared to do anything under the SOG Act and by referring me to the manufacturer were not fulfilling their sales contract. Here is the reply I asked for in writing in order to pursue my case:-
Following the merger of Whirlpool and Indesit, Whirlpool have carried out checks on all of their products sold in the UK. They have found that if a required modification isn’t carried out on certain models of tumble dryer, there is a small risk that the appliance may become unsafe. The modification being offered to you will eradicate this risk.
I regret to advise you that we will not exchange your appliance as a result of this. We're happy with the repair programme put in place and this has also been agreed with Trading Standards. I understand your concerns, but if you follow the guidelines, you will have nothing to worry about.
We haven’t received any reports from our customers of safety issues linked to this matter, and the modification is being made purely as a precaution.
Hotpoint/Indesit would also like to remind customers of the need for proper cleaning and maintenance, as outlined in the user manual.
You can continue to use your machine, but Hotpoint/Indesit recommends that you don’t leave it unattended.
Hotpoint/Indesit are working through these modifications as quick as they can, and they will be with you as soon as possible.
Alternatively, you can contact the manufacturer directly on 0800 151 0905.
And no, Hoptpoint were not automatically replacing machines under one year old or I would not have had to go through all of this now would I?0
