People who comment on your age.

People are often surprised when they find out how old I am. Either that or they are being polite. I was recently asked to settle an argument over my age. I think a full head of hair and (probably controversially) a younger wife helps.
Like others have said though, most people don't look close enough to see the tell tale signs.0 -

Its just luck with genes. Look at Thomas Sangster the little boy on the maze runner and game of thrones who is late 20s.
Some people are quite poor judges of age too, especially if they dont know a lot of people of the age they are guessing. It's much easier to guess a teenager if you have teenage children or are still a teen yourself.
Hubby and I were asked for notes from our parents when we moved here and tried to join the library. We were both 260 -

I think this post is spot on.I think that is very true. I think it happens with height a lot. I am short and people think I am much younger even though I am wearing 'grown up' clothes and don't have a kid's face. I have a friend who was six foot at age 13. She was always being treated as an adult even though she had a baby face and dressed in very young teen clothes. I have a friend whose hair went white in her 20s and she gets mistaken for a much older woman even though she has a very young face and clothes (and looks amazing). I think people just glance at you and notice something obvious (height, grey hair, very young clothes) and come to a conclusion based on that.
Someone who is not-so-tall and quite slim will probably - on first glance - appear to be younger than they are whilst someone who is taller and more well built will appear older.
It's just sub-concious first impressions.
Clothes will also contribute to it.
If you have 2 people of the same age - one who is petite and wearing jeggings & Doc Marts and someone who is maybe 5'8" dressed like this:
the odds are that the latter would be judged to be older.
When I left school aged 17 I was just under 5 feet tall and weighed less than 7 stone.
I travelled to work on the bus and paid half fare for a couple of years without being challenged.
I agree with this too:
It's just a saying. I doubt very much that the person who said it really meant that you looked 12 - regardless of how young you may look.Where I am, the phrase "You/they look about 12" is an actual saying, meaning the person looks young for what they do (or the situation you meet them in), or younger than what you thought, but in no way actually means they look 12.
As in, "I went to see my new doctor today, he looked about 12".
Maybe that person meant it like that.0 -
Hi OP, I can sympathise, regardless of what some people say on here, it's true that some people can be mistaken for being a lot younger. When I was in my 20's I was mistaken for being under 14 on several occasions and now in my mid 30's I get mistaken for being in my 20's. I know it's not people just being polite because it happens all the time and has happened my entire life. The people on here who don't believe it happens are probably just jealous. The problem I have found with being mistaken for younger is that while I'm happy to look youthful (especially as I get older), it can have a negative effect on your confidence, because a lot of people treat you and talk to you like your'e a lot younger. It's even worse when it's someone younger than you, and they actually talk you like your'e younger than them because they just assume you are.0

Body language and how you act are also incredibly important, many people are judging from more than just the surface. But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

When I first began teaching, on the bus I was asked if I was half fare. Although I was flattered, I could hardly say yes, as there were pupils on the same bus.
It is rude to ask someone's age, but if they say you look young, I would not have a problem with that.
My mum always said "I am as old as my tongue, and a little bit older than my teeth."0
