I doubt it. She probably does at first glance, but on closer inspection, she would look closer to her age.

Most strangers who make irritating comments will only be doing so on first glance, not a full inspection. Age judging can't be that trivial or there wouldn't be quite so many cases in the news of asylum seekers getting away (for a while) with claiming to be much younger than they are.

I have never ever met in my entire life, anyone who looks more than 10 years younger than they are.

What proportion of people you meet do you know their age? Maybe you work somewhere where you do see people's DOBs, but I seldom ask, and while I may think a colleague looks a certain age I could be completely wrong. The sample size of people where I actually know their age isn't very large. The one person I can think of who I know for sure was often taken for 10+ years younger is now over 100 and the misjudging really happened from about 80.

I'm not sure that there is a 'one size fits all' answer but depending on circumstances, if they ask you your age then answers you could try are:

"Why do you ask?" (Or, "That's a very personal question. Why do you ask?")

"As old as my tongue and a little older than my teeth"

"Old enough to know it's rude to ask strangers their age" (that's a bit more confrontational, obviously)

    or simply "Over 21"

A surprised look and simply moving on as if you hadn't heard is also an option.

I've met one or two people who look *significantly* younger than they are so I don't find it inherently unbeliveable

Thanks for those :) I think in the future I'll probably be asking "why?" in the most non-confrontational tone that I can manage.

I look younger than my age. As a female I've always been pleased about that. I don't smoke or have children, which I'm sure has helped.

Some years back, I visited a 50 plus living environment. The warden made some comment, I just replied, 'Thanks, but I am of the required age'.

A nephew is 16 this year, but he looks about 12. He is going to have a lot of trouble! I remember always being asked for id when I was 18. In the end I applied for a provisional licence, so I had something to show.

A few years ago I was in a relationship with a younger man -15 years difference. he introduced me to a friend of his. The friend always went on about being old, and how hard things were - to be fair he wasn't in the best of health - and I worked out we were actually the same age, but said nothing. Then one day, when my partner wasn't there, he started up again, and I told him off, and explained we were the same age. He was amazed, and said ' So your partner is the baby!'

I think people believe what they want to believe. I know a couple of people who really do look young for their age (sadly I'm not one myself!), but as other posters have said, we are talking maybe 5 or even 10 years younger. Sorry, I'll never believe you look 19 at 40 or even 35.

People usually assume I am a couple of years older than my actual age, but sometimes I've herd pretty weird things too: once I was working at a summer camp for children 7 to 11 years old, I hadn't had the time to change into my staff uniform due to some parents arriving early... And some of those parents thought I was a little girl! But for Pete's sake, I ascribe that to them being drunk and/or shortsighted, I don't go around claiming I look 11.

Regarding Mary Berry, I don't think she has had any work done. Photographers can take some very flattering photos, but having seen her this week on Comic Bake Off, she is her age.
  • Yaaaaaawn. I'm so young looking and people are so fascinated by me. No one is particularly interested in how old anyone else is. People always feign surprise at how old people are, to be polite. I always think this kind of post says more about a person's immaturity and self obsession than their actual appearance.

I have an American friend who is often asked for proof of her age when ordering alcohol (21 age limit) she is 46! She has even been out with her son and he has been served but she had to show ID.

    You're nice, aren't you?

I'll be sure to print your post out and stick it on my fridge so I can feel someone kicking me when I'm down.

Thanks so much for your time.

I suspect that might be more to do with their attitudes towards women drinking..

You asked for people's opinions, so I have given mine. Or did you only want to hear opinions you agreed with?
