I suspect that might be more to do with their attitudes towards women drinking..

I'm male and I've been asked for ID when buying alcohol in the US. I was 47 at the time.

I was recently in the USA and was always asked for ID when buying alcohol in a supermarket. I'm well over 60. I think I can pass for younger but not that young ...
  • Just wondered what other opinions were on this, and how people deal with the question ...

I look young for my age (30). I know I look young, I can't help it; it's part genetics, part medical, and partly because I don't drink or smoke.

I keep getting people randomly asking my age. It's driving me mad!

For example, I am house-hunting at the moment and sometimes I take along someone older than me, so I suppose it looks like I'm their granddaughter or something. But they just come right out and ask me how old I am.

Is it me or is that just plain rude?

I had an incident this week where someone in a bank asked my age (I thought they were doing it for their info), when I told them, they said I looked about 12.

I shrugged it off at the time, but I'm a bit upset by it. I think I can pass for 16/18, but saying I look 12 is just ridiculous.

I suppose some people might think it's great to be told they look younger than their age ... but I don't think I'm one of them. It's getting more embarrassing the older I get!!

So how do you think I should answer people? Has anyone got any pithy, not rude, replies?
The only one I could come up with is "old enough to know it's rude to ask peoples' ages."

I think they were probably exaggerating when they said 12. I would not take it personally.

People think I am younger than I am. Sometimes it can work in your favour.

I don't think most people intend it to be rude. I know I look younger and people assume I am so I expect people to be surprised when I tell them my age. I can't say it has ever really bothered me. It does not matter if people think I am younger. I have ID if ever I need to prove my age.

Easier said than done but don't let people get to you.
  • Hi. i get this on a daily basis. I'm 32 l, drive busses for a living and keep getting asked if iam old enough. Went for a customer service training course at head office. Everyone was to tell them a bit about there selves and i told them i had 12 years service. Trainer thought i was at it.

Fact is that NO-ONE and I mean NO-ONE looks more than 8-10 years younger than they are; tops! They can kid themselves that they do, or that people tell them they do, but they don't.

If you are 45 and someone does actually think you are 29 (and I find this unlikely,) it's probably because you are dressed young, and have a young-ish look, so you look 20-something at first glance. On closer inspection though, you WILL look closer to your age.

I have seen a few people in the past, who are 40-ish and I have thought they were late 20s. Then on closer inspection, I can tell they are quite a bit older. Your face will give it away, and your neck and hands too.

At the age of 26 I have been given a childs ticket for a film at the cinema. The age for that is 14 or under! Did not ask for a childs ticket, just two tickets and got one adult one child. Not the first time either. Each time I have been directly in front of them. I don't know how close they look but it has been more than a quick glance.

Once somebody who I have known for years questioned my age about whether I was over 16. I cannot remember the exact age I was at the time but it must have been early twenties. They realised after how silly the question was but looking at me they must have thought I looked much younger.

There has been many other times too but I won't list them all. These people have no reason to lie and say I look younger.

Looking closer most people would probably say 18-23 perhaps. Some may still guess at under 18, I don't know. I am not about to poll everyone I meet to find out. I am not sure exactly what would give my true age away, if anything.
As I said, the vast majority of people look their age, and virtually nobody looks more than 8-10 years younger... Even if they like to think they do.

I know I do not look my age. I don't like to think I look that much younger. It would be weird if I did like to think I looked around 14!

I think if you did an experiment/polled people you'd be surprised at the amount of people who actually do look much younger.

I'd be a bit worried about how Peter knows more than you ;):D

He only doubts he can't know for sure, whereas I am 100% certain :)

  • I don't think people look all that closely.

I agree with this; people definitely don't look closely, myself included. Why would we? Nobody's out examining strangers in the street or in a shop! When I used to work in a bar, I ID'd people of all sorts of ages but that doesn't necessarily mean they looked 18. One man must've been nearly 40 and laughed at me - when he gave me his ID and I actually looked at him properly, I realised there was no need to ID him at all, he was clearly over 30 but I had only glanced at him and not realised initially.

I get ID'd a lot and I get surprised reactions from people at work regarding my age so I know I look younger than I am but I don't kid myself I look 16 just because I've been ID'd for paracetamol at a self check out. All it means is the member of staff glanced at me briefly, something made him/her question my age so they asked for ID to be on the safe side (or maybe they were thinking about Challenge 25 for alcohol sales), then they saw my year of birth, looked at me again and realised I wasn't that young after all, and that was the end of it.

This is the point I am trying to make! Like Helen Mirren and Joanna Lumley, these ladies look great, and they are attractive, but they don't look a lot YOUNGER than they are. Maybe a bit younger, (6-8 years or so,) but not a lot.

And as I said, she and Mary, and many other famous ladies of 60-65+ look quite stunning and sexy. But I don't think they look more than 10 years younger than they are. Not when you look at them properly.

I was surprised to discover Andrea McLean was 46 (off Loose Women) I thought she was 38-39. Then again, that is only 8 years younger.

If you can believe that it's possible for people to look 8 years younger than they are, I don't know why 10 years is such a stretch :) I agree it's certainly not common though.
