I think that how old you are does colour your perception of older/younger age groups.

When I was a teenager, one of my friends had a huge crush on a man in his thirties. To me, he seemed incredibly old, although looking back at photos of him, he actually did look very good for 30-odd!

When I meet 30somethings at work, they often say that they don't think that I look my age (51). I'm not in particularly good nick, looks-wise, but to them, being in your fifties means that you're ancient, they probably think that I should be sat at home knitting. I am short and skinny though, so I can wear clothes that are probably really designed with younger women in mind. :o

I do know a woman who is 27, and having her third baby. She is tiny, she really does look around 15 years old and she is always complaining about how she can't buy aerosols, alcohol or kitchen implements in the supermarket, because they don't believe that she is old enough. And she is often asked if her kids are her siblings, people don't think she is old enough to have a 5 year old!
"I may be many things but not being indiscreet isn't one of them"
  • The people on here who don't believe it happens are probably just jealous.

I doubt they are jealous; they just have a different viewpoint :)

We were returning from a holiday recently and as I have wheelchair assistance at the airport we were the last to leave the plane because we had to wait for the ambilift. While we were waiting at the front of the plane, the pilot and co-pilot came out of their cabin. The co-pilot looked 'about 12' and he explained he is always been mistaken for much younger, even the crew on board found it hard to believe he was old enough to fly a passenger plane.

Incidentally, the Krankies were rescued from floods in Lancaster last December, http://www.lep.co.uk/news/local/fan-dabi-dozi-heysham-man-rescues-the-krankies-1-7613011. Jimmy Krankie [Janette] is 68 years old!!!!!!

Well, not 30/12, but when I was 45 I got a lot of people stating they couldn't believe I had a 19-year-old son, and even more embarrassingly, thinking my husband (a mere nine years older than me) was my father.

I was in a restaurant with my son when he was 16 (he was dressed in a suit) and it was clear the staff thought he was my toy boy though, so that argues the other way.

Now, at 59, I occasionally get a comment that I don't look it, but I think that's mere politeness.

I have, in the past, met mid to late-20s chaps and lasses who I could have imagined to be just around puberty, so I don't dismiss this (used to work at a University).

I'm 59 and I like to think I don't look it and have been mistaken for being my 39 yr old son s girlfriend and sister

I agree that some people will just have a different viewpoint, but going by the tone and content of some of the comments, I think that some people are probably a bit jealous :)
  • The more years I clock-up, the harder I find it to guage the age of anyone. To be honest I very often haven't a clue - perhaps that was the same for the person who suggested you looked no more than 12 :)

I think using the age of 12 has significance.

It suggests pre-teenager and that's probably why it seems to be commonly used.

I have no doubt that the OP and a lot of other posters look younger than they are but I suspect the person using age 12 didn't actually mean it as such.
I had an incident this week where someone in a bank asked my age (I thought they were doing it for their info), when I told them, they said I looked about 12.

I shrugged it off at the time, but I'm a bit upset by it. I think I can pass for 16/18, but saying I look 12 is just ridiculous.
Am I the only poster to think this was an unprofessional comment by the bank employee?

Yaaaaaawn. I'm so young looking and people are so fascinated by me. No one is particularly interested in how old anyone else is. People always feign surprise at how old people are, to be polite. I always think this kind of post says more about a person's immaturity and self obsession than their actual appearance.

    100% agree.

And yes, it is usually people who are a bit self obsessed that claim everyone thinks they look really young. And to suggest it's 'jealousy' (as a couple of people have,) is ludicrous. As someone said earlier, people just have differing viewpoints, it doesn't mean that they are jealous. How silly.

As quite a few people have said, sometimes when someone says a person looks younger, it's probably just politeness. I mean, they're not going to say 'geeeee, I wouldn't have said you were 43, you look 53!'
I had the same problem the other day. I was on the way to the post office to collect my pension and a policeman stopped me and asked why I wasn't in school.

    :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

This post speaks volumes....... :D And it highlights how daft all these 'I often get mistaken for my daughter' type of claims actually are.

I have noticed it's almost always women who make these outlandish claims... ;)

My 40 year old son was asked for ID when buying alcohol last month. He was highly amused.

Wow, talk about my suggestions of jealousy being ludicrous (I assume I'm one of the people you and Potternerd are referring too), now you're the one making ludicrous assumptions! I can assure you I am anything but self-obsessed, and nor do I think people are fascinated by me! The fact is I that I do look young for my age, in photos and in real life. I've been told that since I was in my teens and now twenty odd years later I'm still told it. I'm just stating my experiences to lend support to the OP, I'm not trying to boast. In fact I always avoided talking about my age because I used to find it embarrassing because people always thought I was so much younger. The reality is that some people look their age, some look older and some look younger, that's just the way it is, and I'm lucky enough to look younger - so far anyway!
