    Absolutely brilliantly put Heuchera!

The second analogy is also poor. Atheism is a very concrete set of beliefs, chiefly: the denial of the existence of deities.

Atheists like to think of themselves as special, unique and showing superior intelligence, but they really aren't!

You put it far better than I ever could! :j

I agree 100% with everything you have said here, and especially with your last paragraph!

Some atheists are amongst the most arrogant, self-important, and sanctimonious people I know, and are quite often a lot less clever than they make out!

And of course the superb irony is that you fail to see how arrogant, self important and sanctimonious these two posts sound.

For the record I'm ambivalent about religion, I'm neither a believer nor an atheist but like to think I'm open minded and respect other peoples beliefs and would never dream of mocking them.

Of course the very nature of belief is that the act of believing means the believer thinks they are right and anyone who is skeptical or doesn't share that belief is wrong. To entertain that the other person may have a point would be to doubt ones own belief.

No they don't. You keep telling yourself they do though...

Using my comments and trying to use them against me and Heuchera is very poor form.

    Must try harder old chap/chappess.

You can be respectful of all religions without adhering to all the values of any particular one. I tend to think that most if not all religions share similar essential values which are similar to the ones I believe in anyway. It's more the customs that are different and make people belong to one or another.

I'm not telling myself, you're telling me, which just goes to show how you fail to see to it.

I refer you to my last paragraph which you chose to remove.

I don't have a set of deal breakers - what would drive me mad in one man I could put up with in a different one! It's the whole package that counts with me rather than individual traits.

There are a couple of dealbreakers I've always had with relationships. I've never fancied skinny women at all, I'm afraid. That's not to say they would need to be fat, just have some flesh on them. I would never have looked at a woman with tattoos, but back in the day there weren't many about.

Like some others, I could never have a relationship with a woman that smoked. They just smell. Back in my youth I did have brief flings with a couple that did but they were just for recreation and never got past the first night. I couldn't imagine living in a house with a smoker.

I could absolutely not have a relationship with anyone who was religious. Relationships are about a meeting of minds and I could never really respect the judgement of someone who believed in all that stuff. Again, I had brief flings with one or two back in my youth, but never let any get serious, since they seemed to regard it as more important than the relationship. I think your partner is always the most important factor in your life.

Being an atheist is the default for every human. People only get into religion through being instructed/indoctrinated by others. Atheism is only a 'religion' in the same way as not collecting stamps is a hobby.

I know your perspective on religion from other threads and I respect it, even if I don't agree with you. But your point about atheism being the default of every human being intrigues me. Why and how do you reach that conclusion and where is your proof (considering that proof plays such a massive part in your argument for non-belief).

all babies are athiest until their parents raise them otherwise. You don't get many 4 year olds who sit up at dinner one day and say "Mum, I realise this is lamb night but I think I'm Christian so I'm going to have a glass of milk with my dinner".

I do not follow the religion my parents did; I thought long and hard, and rejected it as being totally wrong for me.

To return slightly to the original theme of the thread, I realise when I wrote my list of deal-breakers, I didn't include "wanting kids" as being a deal-breaker - because the idea of any form of mini-me is so completely off my radar that I never even thought about it! :rotfl:

I'm not sure they need proof, surely it's common sense? No one is born with religion, it's a man made concept regardless of if you believe it or not. Most people assume their parents viewpoints as default but I'd argue you aren't really religious until you are old enough to make up your own mind. The default position would be no position at all, neither believing in God or not believing in God. Humans are after all born with very little.

However I'm not really sure why people are getting so offended. This is a topic about people's deal breakers and therefore a very personal subject. If people don't wish to date religious people that is their choice. I wouldn't either.
