I have a couple of phrases and words that really irk me.....
'I need to spend a penny'.....I have no idea why but that really makes me rage inside. I know where it's come from, and why people say it, but it annoys me!
'Doing my nut in'......just, no.
Anything that has come off the back of TOWIE 'Amazeballs' etc
I Swear down
And I really annoy myself with my lifelong inability to pronounce 'oven' properly, I always end up saying 'othen'. Idiot.0 -

What does this mean? How would it be used in a sentence? I never heard it. Thanks0 -

Years ago you had to put a penny in a public toilet door to lock it I think,0 -

You are obviously too young, the old penny was inserted to UNLOCK the toilet door! Quite a bargain in today's terms.0 -

Plenty of sources have no issue with it.
You've taken it the wrong way, I didn't mean "instead of" annoys me!
It was probably how I'd wrote it that made you think that!
I meant I hate it when people say brought instead of saying bought.
Edited original post now!"The truth is of course is that there is no journey.
We are arriving and departing all at the same time."0 -
Interesting, never thought of it as an annoying word, more useful than anything else. It's certainly used in Scotland but it's also the only word that neatly describes "outside this area/ these boundaries/ this realm without (!) using too many words. I think it's also used in legal terms. Guess everyone has their bugbears.
'Outwith' is a wonderful and useful Scottish word, as you say. It plays an effective supporting role in Scottish law.
It may be a word which is outwith the ken of some, and outwith the tolerance of others.
I still like it.

"It’s important to remember that hanged has a very specific use. We only use hanged when we are referring to the killing of a human being by suspending the person by the neck. With all other past tenses of hang you will want to use hung. And if death is not intended or likely, or the person is suspended by a body part other than the neck, use hung. For example,
They hung him out to dry.
He was hung upside down as part of the prank.
They hung him by his arms and beat him."

Or, as the late great Terry Pratchett summed it up:
hanged, hung
From Terry Pratchett's Maskerade:Salzella shrugged. 'We've got to do this properly. Did you know Dr Undershaft was strangled before he was hung?'
'Hanged,' said Bucket, without thinking. 'Men are hanged. It's dead meat that's hung.'
'Indeed?' said Salzella. 'I appreciate the information. Well, poor old Undershaft was strangled, apparently. And then he was hung.'0 -

As regional irritants go, this one really annoys me:
"The thing is, is - right".
I don't even know how to punctuate it!
It's a phrase used to locally to convey the sense of "OK, the reason I am calling you/talking to you is...."0 -

How about this little ditty...
"Here I sit broken hearted. Paid a penny and only farted"0
