Words or phrases that annoy you

Meat is hung, murderers are (or were) hanged. I believe that it depends on whether the thing you are talking about is living or not. So meat is hung, because the animal is already dead before it is hung up to mature, but a murderer is (was) hanged, because they are alive when the hanging takes place. All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0 -
My Husband (& Mum for that matter) always ask the most random questions possible when I tell a story. Questions that have no bearing to the story/don't add to it in any way. My Husband asks because he's trying to make conversion, rather than asking a question he's genuinely interested in getting an answer to.
For example I was telling him about a meeting I was in. He asked me which floor of the building it was on. 1. He's never visited my place of work 2. Even if I told him, he wouldn't know where it was. 3. The floor has nothing whatsoever to the story.
It makes me so angry. This is why I don't tell him much anymore ha.0 -
I've worked out roughly what it means (shorthand for a relative of some sort), but I agree it grates. OH is the only one I've seen anywhere else.
I had to ask someone what LO meant. Little one?? why don't they just say child?
A couple of sayings annoy me, such as 'well to tell the truth' I had an elderly aunt who would often answer a question with this, I always wanted to say 'don't you always tell the truth then'
'At the end of the day' really really irritates me too.
'Awesome' has to be one of the most over used words..no, your cake wasn't awesome! the universe might be, but not something you've just eaten.Everyone you meet may be fighting a battle you know nothing about.
Be kind!

Happy Friday, everyone!
I'm a little late in coming to the party but would like to add my list of bugbears:
• horrid (it's just got an awful sound to it)
• mindful (instead of considerate - what's wrong with good old consideration?)
• bro/ blud
• fanks
• awesome
• "pushing the boundaries"
• "I'll circle back to you" (and making a circle motion with an index finger....)
• definately
• job's a good 'un
• coach instead of carriage for a train (coaches are buses in my opinion and in both cases I am a passenger, not a customer. A customer has a choice, a passenger generally doesn't!!)
• "do you get me?"
• and my husband's bugbear is "believe you me".
Will now read the last 7 pages of this thread!
Wishing all a nice weekend

Interesting, never thought of it as an annoying word, more useful than anything else. It's certainly used in Scotland but it's also the only word that neatly describes "outside this area/ these boundaries/ this realm without (!) using too many words. I think it's also used in legal terms. Guess everyone has their bugbears.0

People who start or finish a sentence with 'At the end of the day....'
'Chillax'
'Amazeballs'
And one that pops up on FB a bit when people give a birthday greeting and it ends 'Love you lots like Jelly Tots!!' aaaaarrggggggghhhh!!!! One that irritates me more and more these days is the use of 'they' and 'their' in the singular. I know it is becoming more and more common -- even the BBC uses it -- and I understand the reasons: 'he/she' is clumsy and people are reluctant these days to use just 'he' in a non gender-specific way.
I use 'you' for second person singular, not 'thee' or 'thou', so I have no logical basis for ranting against 'they' as a third person singular. It's just word aversion on my part.0 -

Not quite.
"It’s important to remember that hanged has a very specific use. We only use hanged when we are referring to the killing of a human being by suspending the person by the neck. With all other past tenses of hang you will want to use hung. And if death is not intended or likely, or the person is suspended by a body part other than the neck, use hung. For example,
They hung him out to dry.
He was hung upside down as part of the prank.
They hung him by his arms and beat him."

"I'm not being funny but........"
"Selfie."
Pah I so detest that word!!!!!
"My bad."
Why can't people just say the word sorry?!
"Just sayin."
Saying what exactly?!
"YOLO"
"Like." in every sentence.
"Is it cold enough for you."
No, please make it even colder than it already is!
Think I'm old before my time as the 'yoof ' of today think they are cool with all these new words/sayings!
My list could go on............."The truth is of course is that there is no journey.
We are arriving and departing all at the same time."0 -
I hate it when people refer to their DD or their DS or whatever. It seems very prevalent on this forum (so I risk making myself unpopular here.)
For a long time I couldn't even figure out what it meant!
I hate the word tapered for some reason0
