I was told ages ago, that Citrus is good at keeping cats out. Apparently they hate the smell of it.
I used to get them coming in mine all the time, it used to set the dogs off at night, and my PT nearly got a cat one morning in the garden. As I didnt want this to happen, I chopped up lemons and chucked em around the bushes etc, and done this every other week or so.
Never saw a cat out there again. Ive moved now, and dont get them in my new garden, that ive seen or heard anyway.
Worth a go, and they just rot down.I know my spelling is shocking  It is alot better than it used to be though :rotfl:0 -
I trimmed my mahonia, collected the spiky leaves and spread them about an area a local cat was 'favouring'. I used small loops of wire to pin them down on the ground, and since then no cats have been scraping/pooing there.0

As much as I dislike cats and what they do to small animals as well as leaving unwanted packages in our gardens - I honestly think that grippers would be going too far with keeping them away. Grippers could possibly do real and lasting damage to any cat which just isn't fair. With prickly leaves they get the chance to have a scare, lick their wounds and it all be a warning for them not to go there again. With the above idea, they might just be injured enough for it to, eventually kill them very, slowly and painfully!
Please don't use them!
Sue PS. Also remember that it's not just cats that will visit your garden, it's quite possible you get foxes, badgers and hedgehogs.Sealed Pot Challenge 001 My Totals = 08 = £163.95 09 = £315.78 10 = £518.80 11 = £481.87 12 = £694.53 13 = £1200.20! 14 = £881 15 = £839.21 16 = £870.48 17 = £871.52 18 = £800.00 19 = £851.022021=£820.26[/SizeGrand Totals of all members (2008 uncounted) 2009 = £32.154.32! 2010 = £37.581.47! 2011 = £42.474.34! 2012 = £49.759.46! 2013 = £50.642.78! 2014 = £61.367.88!! 2015 = £52.852.06! 2016 = £52, 002.40!! 2017 = £50,456.23!! 2018 = £47, 815.88! 2019 = £38.538.37!!!! :j0 -
Has anyone used prikka strips to stop cats going over walls/fences?
I had put up trellis along the majority of one wall that a neighbours cat uses to climb over to get into our garden, but our neighbour has put a table up against one of the higher areas of the wall (which is minus trellis) so now the cat can reach and gain access over our shed into the garden!
I was thinking of putting prikka strip on the wall to stop this continuing. Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

It sounds as though your neighbour's either being cantankerous or it's a strange coincidence! Is there any way you can trellis the rest?
Have just had a look at the prikka strips and though they appear lethal they offer them to be used for cat deterrents as well as thieves. A neighbour of ours has them, though he's been burgled, but if he needed them for that then I guess cats will have been on them anyway.
How about trying the trellis first!Good luck as I know it's not funny having them in our gardens, we had one earlier this evening, but a saucepan of water got it beautifully, so with luck it'll not be seen in here again!!!

You aren't supposed to but I even took the rounded tips off in an attempt to sharpen them to keep the cats out; scratched up my arm & wrist doing it & they STILL walk on them!! Damn cats!! My garden stinks of wee!!0 -

Like so many of these scenarios there is history. They bought the house a couple of years ago and applied for change of use to turn it into a guest house, we and some other neighbours opposed it due to parking implications but the council ruled against our opposition and granted the permission and they have been a pain since then.
I can't fit trellis on the higher wall unfortunately, hence thinking of the prikka strips. I have cats myself, but they have a litter tray so have never messed in the garden and are too old now so barely leave the house, let alone the garden.
I do so hate selfish cat owners.BB78 wrote:I've got Prikka strips along the top of several of my fence panels & I would say they are completely useless!! It was amusing watching the cats trying to jump over them or gingerly walk on them & almost fall off the fence at first but now they happily walk on them as if they weren't even there!!

I totally sympathise. I keep chickens and am really careful about keeping them clean to avoid unnecessary odours, but the cat pee and poop is much much more offensive.
Your experience is exactly what I was wondering. I think I might consider something else like putting planted window boxes on top of the shed (its a wall store style shed) and sprinkling Lion roar pellets onto the soil to deter the cat...Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

Is there a practical reason why you can't fit trellis? Could you perhaps fit a 'shelf' of netting - flimsy enough that the cat won't try to walk on it but deep enough that they wouldn't want to jump over it... It's not something I've seen done but I think the theory is sound.Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan
