    really, you don't say, I hadn't noticed...

the difference being that wildlife tend to self regulate rather than overpopulate. We live in an urban area with very few gardens. Most of the people around us recognise this and have one or two animals that they take good care of, our former neighbours took in anything that moved. How would you feel if every time you tried to leave the house you had to negotiate piles of cat and dog poo. That was the reality we had every day, having to carry our toddler through the garden rather than letting him walk down the path.

I did not advocate dumping animals in a box and it is unfair of you to misquote me to imply that I did. I said I got very tempted to put them in a box and take them to the RSPCA 300 miles away. i.e. far enough away that they couldn't make their way back of their own accord but would be in good hands.

OMG. You really beleive that its ok to take a cat away from its owners and dump it 300 miles away, but as long as you take it to the RSPCA everything is OK.

I stand by what previously said. You really are sick.

I don't advocate dumping animals. I do advocate responsible pet ownership.

It just goes to show the average persons attitude these days is, "screw everyone else".

I have a small raised vegetable patch and for the last two years the local cats are using it as a public loo! After the first year I removed some of the soil before I replanted and replaced it, This year I face the same problem and before I replace the top soil, is the soil safe to plant in and can I eat the vegetables that will grow there.
I haven't eaten the ones near the poo:o but I am growing tired of throwing them out after all my hard work. I have 2 cat scanners but have seen the cats crawling under them commando style (no exageration!) so I change the position of them weekly but I am ready to actually invest in a blooming flame thrower now!

The one thing that cats do not like is water.

Give them a good soaking with a hose if you can.

(And stand by for the "Cats can do no wrong brigade")
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

    Hi there

My mum has had the same problem with one of her raised beds and has had to throw out loads of leeks "just in case"...its the nicely dug earth they can't resist...
They have been looking up on the internet and are now trying :-
neat zoflora drizzled around the sleepers and lots of chicken poo compost on the eart -apparently its the really strong smells they can't stand... so the neat chilli powder, curry powder, eucalyptus oil ideas work on the same idea...
she has also covered that bed with cloches until they have done building... she now has big 6ft high wooden frames covered with mesh on the other 2 beds -so that should keep the little blighters out..
Hope you get something sorted as its so annoying isn't it:mad:

Chicken wire or some other covering, no other definite way I'm afraid.

I was thinking of putting chicken wire or the greenhouse shading net round and over attatching it to some woodnen stakes but couldn't figure out how I would access this to work, weed or eat without rebuilding it each time?
I tried the olbas oil and it did no good but I will get some chicken poo and try that. Does it smell really evil though?
Would you change all the soil or just the top few inches?
