Help!cats using my garden as a loo (merged threads)

My MIL has a terrible problem with cats using her garden as a toilet. Her neighbours have quite a few of them and of course they never go in their own garden, always in someone elses!:mad:
She has tried all sorts of things to keep them out including stuff they don't like the smell of, but they seem to get used to it and come back after a while.
Does anyone have any tried and tested tips please?

I have the same problem. is getting a dog the only answer???
Am currently trying citrus oil (bought at a car boot for 40p!). Will let you know if it works?

I also had trouble with cats using my garden as a toilet. I have found that if you place old c/ds around the garden it stops them. I think they don't like to see their reflection. You have to stand them up. It's worked for me, good luck.

Hi there, firstly, it's a myth that cats don't poo in their own garden - I have three and they all do their business on home turf so to speak! It's more a case of an individual cat liking a certain spot rather than them knowingly deciding against doing their business in their own garden...

Anyhow, the suggestion of the CDs is an excellent one, also, if you can catch them in the act, try squirting water at them - a couple of incidents like this should deter them.

Edit - regarding the CD's, the best way of using these is to drill holes in each one then string them together and hang them near where the poo always is...

Thanks for the suggestions. Will get her to try the cd's. I think she has tried squirting with water but her garden is quite long and they always seem to choose the top end of the garden to poop in. In fact she rarely sees them in the garden, just where they have been! One thing she did do was to bury an inflated balloon just below the surface of the soil so that when they scratched the balloon popped and frightened them away, but they have got used to that now though.

I smeared vaseline on the top of my fence. They really didn't like that. I'm going to try the CDs as well though, my fence needs painting so I'm going to have to forego the vaseline for a while!

The old gardeners that use our shop buy Mothballs and they swear by them for keeping cats away as they hate the smell,just crush them up a bit and scatter:)

Thanks for putting that section from [SIZE=+1]Desiderata[/SIZE] on vivatifosi, it kept me in check as cats and I don't get on at all well as I'm a bird lover. I'd have perhaps said too much had it not been for 'hearing' Harry Secombe singing that beautiful piece. Beautiful and should be seen/read far more frequently.

Good luck with the cat problems folk. I do commiserate though as we have 4 3 doors down, 2 next door and half a dozen a little further away and they make me MAD :mad: Try holly or bramble clippings on the ground all around the area they normally frequent, it soon makes them think against it. Incidentally, I would NEVER harm and cat.

I put the section from Desiderata on because a couple of weeks ago I thought the boards were going to go into meltdown. People started attacking Martin over Icesave, on some boards others started attacking each other over really trivial things and so forth. It was written not long after WW1 and read and circulated during the depression as well as WW2 and the Vietnam War, so I can't help thinking that no matter how bad things get now, its appropriate!
