ha ha ha, oysterman, couldn't agree more. They ruin the area nicely dug out for plants and it stinks for days afterwards. I have the added problem that I own guinea pigs who enjoy being in the (very secure) run on the garden - I can get home to find upto EIGHT neighbourhood cats in my garden some days!!

I've tried a spray you can get a pet shops called "get off my garden" (I kid you not) which is meant to put them off. It works to an extent but obviously it wears off after a spell of rain or even a dry day or 2. Undoubtedly the best deterrent I've found is having my parents' dog round for a couple of afternoons, she hates cats even more than you or I and the darned feline nuisances seem to remember and stay away. Hope you find something equally as effective

I read somewhere that cats do not like pepper so you could try sprinkling some on your garden.

it might sound strange, but apparently cats dont like Lion Poo. You can buy it in pellet form from pet stores or garden centres or somewhere like that. I think you just sprinkle it around and they avoid like the plague. I dont remember what the brand is called or anything, try doing a google search. I remember reading it in the Times Gardening section a few months back.

Alternatively, cats hate lemons and mint, maybe try planting mint and throwing lemons around the place!

AAAwww i love cats! Hahaha let them poo everywhere......lol

No seriously, my next door neighbour has this funny cat sort of sign thing! It is in the shape of a cat and it sticks in the ground. She has it amongst some flowers. The eyes are reflective like a real cats. It really works! Keeps cats away!

Can't link but copy and paste this into your browser - it's very helpful

Wouldn't recommend the cat v cat approach.

    1. Can lead your cat to pee indoors (and don't let anyone tell you a neutered tom doesn't spray)

    2. Your cat will poop there too to show who's boss. You'll be up to your armpits in it.

    3. Fighting. Not very mse friendly when it costs £40 a shot to patch up your cat when it tries to repel alien poopers.

So speaks a woman who knows and has a water pistol toting husband.....

Oops, should say that I got the above site from the link Grumbler mentios I think -this thread is quite good.

Please don't do what some fellow MSE posters have advocated and intentionally but "accidentally" poison cats by putting flowers which causes a slow and painful death to the animal if the pollen is ingested by them - that's just deliberate cruelty to both the cat and the cats' owners and does nothing to stop the cats going into their garden in the first place.

As mentioned above pepper is apparently effective. They obviously sniff a lot before doing their business and it gets up their nose and is unpleasant. You'd need to apply in dry weather and keep applying it after rain has dried up. On a previous thread someone mentioned using chilli powder - hmmm, I am not suggesting using this as cats noses are so sensitive, but whoever mentioned it did say the cats remembered where it was and never went back.

I have cats of my own and go cleaning up after them in neighbours' gardens - but this rarely happens now as they are inside most of the time and if I do let them out they come inside to use their litter tray. I really wish other cat owners would take a more responsible approach as this topic upsets more people than enough.
