  • I've bought some plants that cats apparently hate called Coleus Canina. I'm going to put them at the bottom of the garden which should hopefully keep the cats away.

    See here for more info:

Will let you know if they work!

Hmm... when you clean up an area that cats have been using you need to use a cleaner that does NOT have ammonia in it. Cats apparently love the smell. Beats me why - but there ya go :)

I imagine it is because urine has some ammonia in it, so the cats probably mistake the smell of ammonia for another cat's pee and feel compelled to investigate and mark the territory of this 'rival'.

  • My parents have been having a real problems with neighbours cats in their garden - so much so there could be a court case looming. The cat scarers are generally very good but get through batteries quickly and as they have such a large garden, there is no close by electricity supply. We have tried everything: garlic, chilli powder, citrus peel and Blu-Loo crumbled onto the soil. Moth balls work too. These methods are effective in dry weather but not wet. If things are really bad, contact your local council as if it becomes a health hazard you will get some sympathy with your case. From long personal experience with cats, (and speaking as a cat lover - but a keen gardener!) if they foul on a lawn with no attempt to bury the mess; they haven't been properly trained and you could argue the owner has neglected them. Dirty owners create dirty pets.

There was a petition on the Downing Street website last year to try and make it mandatory for cat owners to have litter trays. I can't see why they don't: dog mess is no different to cat mess in the nuisance factor. Both are domestic pets.

Thanks for that info PShed. That would be marvellous if something like that came into force! Fingers crossed for owners to have to take responsibility for the pets, about time to!

    Very sweeping statement.

My two cats are very much loved and cared for. They're regarded as part of the family but one very rarely buries their mess regardless of where it is left. Litter tray (we have two) our lawn, flower bed - no matter.
Ours were obtained as rescued cats and both lived indoors for a year before got a house with a garden. In that year both used litter trays indoors.

Neither I nor my partner are dirty. Neither of us neglect our cats. Neither of us mistreat our cats.
Your statement above implies that I and my partner are neglecting our cats and don't care for them.

    You couldn't be more wrong.

I've got a "Mega-Sonic Cat Repeller" model: STV610 does anyone know is this supposed to be silent to the human ear when in operation??
The instruction manual seems to suggest it should be but when its turned on all you can hear is this constant squeaking noise coming from it which only annoys myself & the neighbours and does nothing to deter the cats!!

We are cat owners but ours is an indoor cat and does not go out. However there are so many cats in our area I'm sick to the back teeth of picking up and cleaning up after the other peoples cats. We have 2 that regularly poop in our garden and don't bury it. They tried in our raised bed and managed to ruin a good few herbs but they are now replaced and covered with wire mesh.

I would happily strangle the little blighters but would feel guilty! Have tried speaking to the owners but they could not care less about it cos their cats dont do it in their gardens. I ended up asking one what she would think if i let my cat poop all over her garden. I have 3 kids as does she and she could not care less. Thats what gets my goat, people who could not care less about their pets and refuse to take responsiblity for the actions of said pet. If it was a dog i could report them to the council but its a cat but considering writing an anonymous letter to the council reporting the offending owners for being irresponsible!

Let the noise persist BB, with any luck they'll move house and take the ruddy cats with em!:D

They are as you read in the leaflet, inaudible to us humans, but (....so it says) audible to cats emitting a high-pitched sound that makes them bolt and never wish to come back to your garden again. That being the case, but yours obviously not working properly, I'd take/send it back stating the problems and asking for your money back. Even if it was working properly it's really never worth using them, we had one 4 years ago, money for old rope as it didn't do a thing!
