Confession time: I can't ride a bike, I failed my only foreign language 'O' level.
Sue, i assume your boys (a) have railcards, (b) know to book tickets in advance to get the best fares (c) use splitty ticket or similar websites to get the cheapest split fares (d) that the train companies own websites often have special deals. If they use virgin trains, the virgin red app has some offer at the moment.
DS2 staying at uni town over the Summer to write dissertation - due in mid September. He has to move accommodation at the end of June. Yep, they both have the 16-25 rail card, I tend to do the bookings for them although they have done them at points themselves, James prefers to go the off peak route rather than an advance fare for the flexibility especially if he is coming home straight off the back of an SR duty, he never knows when it might go over/is needed for form filling.
Josh is mainly transported by car at the moment, he has come home via a train a couple of times but it makes for a stressful time as it has to be micro managed from afar as he gets confused with how it all works and how to ask for help from staff members, how to plan his journey etc. He is completely unable to cope with the underground despite being shown several times how to work it all out, he is still hopelessly befuddled by it all.
None of the routes are covered by Virgin.
Re your son, yep it sounds a pain!We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.

I assume SR means Student Rep? Do they get paid for doing that?
I remember when one of mine finished at Uni, and I went up to get her and all her stuff back. I had a very small car, but had been able to pack an enormous amount of stuff into it over the years, including a double drainer double sink!
However, I couldn't get all her stuff into the car AND her as well, so she had to come back by train! :rotfl:
I couldn't believe it! When I was at Uni, I was limited to one trunk which went by TNT, a manageable suitcase, (no wheels on suitcases then!) and a backpack! :rotfl:(I just lurve spiders!)

Senior resident in the halls Pyxis....they get reduced price accomodation which initially looks like a good trade off but when it comes down to it, it is a whole lot of stress, lots of sleepless nights and makes it almost impossible to get a part time job to fit around either because of the shifts or because the SR's are not allowed to work in certain trades (for example bar work). So far this year James has been thrown against a car and had his life threatened/attempts at beating him up several times. It's certainly been a rough year with the new students this time, unfortunately the London gang mentality appears to be creeping into uni students now, say something they don't like and all of a sudden you are enemy number one for 'disrespecting' them.
Re stuff - James has managed to accumulate a horrendous amount. When we went to pick him up last year we ended up having to make emergency arrangements at a storage facility there and then packing what we could into the car. Josh on the other hand hasn't accumulated that much but it is his full drum kit which is the problem, something he has to have there as he is a music student. We made it! Yep! The car incident ended up with James having a dislocated hip, knee and shoulder (not that hard really as he has a connective tissue disorder but still painful) and a mild concussion plus of course, lots of cuts and bruises. He's also had to deal with several suicide attempts from residents, students in crisis and students having silly accidents and hurting themselves when drunk which require medical assistance (all SR's are trained in first aid, conflict resolution, drug awareness, health and safety etc etc etc)
As far as he is concerned, a 50% reduction in rent is not worth it anymore and I agree. We made it! I lived somewhere that was entirely flat, where 'everybody' rides a bike, so it was the natural/normal thing for 'everybody' to do.
I got a C in O Level French. Hated the teacher, he was what I call an Irritwat.
I can't even remember when I started riding a bike, I have always seemed to have done it...mind you, I still fell off when I was 11 and smashed my two front teeth to pieces, doubt I would be able to ride so well now though.
I also got a C in French, think I got bored towards the end as my French was a lot better than a C.We made it! I learned to ride a bike very late, at 12 or 13. Rode one for a bit, but had had no road training, so I was a menace. Have barely ridden one since as I find them incredibly uncomfortable due to the shape of my sacrum. Ditto even an exercise bike. Ditto sitting on the ground!
I was also very late learning to swim. I managed to do a width without armbands in the last few minutes of my very last free school swimming lessons, at about the age of 14.
I can still only do about a dozen strokes before sinking!(I just lurve spiders!)
