    The Cambridge Latin books?

Caecilius, Metella and Quintus along with Grumio. Grumio est in culina. Grumio est ebrius. Again.

There's a few small bells tinkling, I think you might be right.
And I can actually understand those quotes - could be a Fawlty Towers episode, the one where they try to go upmarket but the chef gets !!!!!! ;)

    I bet most people couldn't.

I bet it's not available in most places and, even if it were, it'd be unafforable, like £250/year or something.

I did it for two years through the U3A. £48 a year enabled you to take up to 4 courses, more if there were vacancies.
Of course, the U3A depends on people volunteering to lead courses, and what is available varies a lot from area to area.

It is often available through local Adult Education evening classes too, and concessions are available for people on low incomes ad benefits.

We used the Cambridge books in the U3A course. Book 1 was about a family living in Pompeii before the eruption. At the end of the book, I was quite upset thinking that the family were about to be obliterated by Vesuvius!
Book two saw the scene switch to Roman Britain.

I'm still peeved that I missed out on learning Latin although I went to grammar school. At my first one you didn't start Latin until 3rd year,

We had no choice - Latin and French were compulsory for the first 2 years then I thnk French was still compulsory to GCE and, if we wanted to do another language, Latin was also compulsory and we could choose German, Spanish or Greek as the third one.

Snap! Apart from the Spanish - not an option at my school. I did Latin, French and German to 'O' Level. Have forgotten stacks and stacks of German, though I did manage to put a sentence together a couple of weeks ago, just about!
Have remembered more French, helped by attending a fun little French conversation class off and on for the past few years! My sort of class - no homework, no grammar exercises, no written work, just try and dredge up what you can remember from schooldays while having a laugh! :)

This here is a zoomed-in audio waveform. If it didn't have any ups or downs there would only be silence. Same goes for the heartbeat, and my mood :)

Having completed my O-levels, I never used French for decades until my parents moved to France.
I was amazed at how quickly I managed to pick it up again - or, at least, understand what people were saying even if I couldn't reply immediately.

Sed non est necesse omnes linguas Latinam discere capsularum modo statim conversus in elit !

Does that mean "someone is showing off"?

    It had me stumped! :D

Somewhere, can't remember where, there's a book/list of very well known phrases or sayings , some very modern ones, translated into Latin! Great fun trying to work out what they are!
I think they did that on QI once! :D

For example, I found this by googling.......... You should be able to get it knowing very little Latin, in view of the breaking news this morning!

Volito sicut papilio, pungo sicut apis. Maximus sum.

I managed the first six words, then got lost.

Not sure about the last two words.

Shouldn't they be "Ego sum maximus"?

I think you only need 'ego' if you are emphasising the 'I'. Otherwise, because every part of the verb is different, you don't need the pronoun. It's the same in modern Italian, too!
The Latin verb tends to be at the end of the sentence, although the verb 'to be' can be an exception.

We're at that time of year when the offspring are returning to the nest, James is already doing his impression of a boomerang, he has been home for the last almost 2 weeks but is going back to his uni today only to come back here again on Tuesday for a week or so, then back to uni and hopefully if he can move/swap a few SR shifts, back for good near the end of June. If he can't swap shifts, then his boomerang impression will continue into the second week of July (he can earn more by coming home in between SR shifts, even when taking the cost of rail fares into account).

His accomodation services have asked if they can his room back at the earliest opportunity for the SR for the block next year but until he has finished all his shifts, he has to keep his room...they expect him to get them covered by the other SR's but that is a lot easier said than done because the other SR's are also wanting to return home and are also receiving the same request from accomodation (i.e. they want the rooms back early but also still want the shifts covered)

At the moment he is not going to be an SR next year as it is his final year and he would like to concentrate on that but I can see him being called on at some point once the realities bite for the new ones doing it next year, it's not easy combining study and uni life when you have been up all night sorting out errant students getting up to mischief or hurting themselves, or being attacked by guests of the students or students themselves because they do not like being told they can't have loud music playing at 4 in the morning, or that they cannot smoke in the halls.

Josh is coming home tomorrow, this is the test where we see if the car is the right size to bring all his stuff back. He will still have to go back at the end of June for some final exams as he struggled with his aspergers/health and was too unwell for 2 of them (managed to get good grades on the other 7 though). He's loved it so far though, despite coming down with a horrible flu/GI like thing which laid him low for a good couple of weeks and made him want to be at home with his mum as his nurse maid (he didn't come home, the girls took on the mum role - hmm, maybe he has it sussed!). He blames exam stress, the same thing happened when he had his GCSEs...I blame not eating or sleeping properly in the prep stages and then picking up everything going.

My house is going to be noisy again, youngest is not impressed, he had got used to it being just me and him and a lovely quiet house.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.
