Does seem funny that people want their Android phone getting the latest OS as soon as possible but many don't want to lose W7 when given a free upgrade option.
If you're on Win8/8.1 then the upgrade shouldn't be too much of a shock as W10 looks and behaves in a similar (ie slightly schizophrenic) manner and coming from Win7 can be made easier using classic shell... the underlying operation isn't too hard to adjust to.
What I find irritating was the way some areas like 'system' have a certain new style look and others like 'control panel' are just old W7 type windows. It feels very much like 2 teams built W10 and then patched it together just before launch and no one noticed the slight differences.
Thats the best way of thinking about windows 10, two teams developing... The difference with windows 8, it seems that neither team actually bothered to meet. I mean really, windows 8? !!!!!!. Full screen apps using a totally alien interface.
If youve ever witnessed an elderly person try to open a picture in windows 8 from the desktop, and the look of total horror when the desktop disappears, all the familiar icons interface conventions theyve used for years have changed...
Ive watched it. And on more than one occasion ive watched them close the laptop, put it back in its box and return to their old one.
Windows 10 fixes that now, for the user an modern app doesnt feel like a massive jump, it works in the same way all their other familiar programmes work.0 -
There was once a man called FRED246 who had his PCs running on Windows XP. Everything worked well. He was happy and had a good life. He used Chrome and AVG. He could spend the time not on his PC living life to the full.
One day some-one persuaded him he needed Windows 10. He bought a Windows 7 disc which could then be upgraded to Windows 10. He sat in front of his PC for hour after hour waiting for all the latest downloads. His life was now boring and sad. He accepted the upgrade to Windows 10. Fred could see light at the end of the tunnel.
He turned on his new Windows 10 PC. Looks good. Fred is happy. But then his screen went grey. It flashed multiple colours. Then a mish mash of colour all over the place. He hunted for the latest drivers. Windows 10 is not supported the website said.
He looked for drivers for his lovely network printer. Windows 10 is not supported. Buy a new printer it said.
Fred is now doing a clean install of Windows 7. In a few hours of more wasted time Fred may be able to use it.
Fred stayed on Windows XP because it worked and did everything he wanted. Fred still doesn't know why Windows 10 is supposed to be better. Fred prefers operating systems that work.
Just for balance.
I have a Dell 6400 laptop from 2006, knackered memory slot, so runs on 2GB ram, knackered hard drive, put in a cheap ssd.
It started with Vista, ND helped update it to Win 7, it then ran Win 10 Preview, finally the full Win 10 Pro.
It prints to a Canon i560 and an HP 1320, dating from around 2003 and 2005 respectively. I let Win 10 install the drivers, no searching around.
It works fine for browsing and email, which is all the vast majority of people require.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
I was basically waiting for a reason to change my operating system and one never came. That was why I was still on XP. No-one has yet told me how Windows 7 or Windows 10 is better than Windows XP. They are different but how are they superior? Most people just browse the internet on a PC and maybe use a few documents. That is why linux machines are actually very good. Just turn them on and you have Firefox and Open Office. All free software that Microsoft charges hundreds for. I used to use a retailer that sold linux machines. They had rave reviews. Then Microsoft wined and dined the owner and suddenly it was all Microsoft at his store.0

The problem with Windows is that it was originally designed to run on single-user machines with no network access. So security was considered irrelevant. Hence why Windows is so susceptible to viruses and malware (compared to Unix-like systems).
Vista improved upon XP's almost unusable user-level security by making even Administrators run executables as a standard user, temporarily elevating privileges and prompting the user if required. Also, parts of the registry and file-system are virtualised, so that programs don't corrupt the original files/keys. It's a clever way to work around the problem of implementing security features, whilst still being able to run old insecure programs.
Few hardware manufacturers supported 64-bit XP, but since Vista/7, 64-bit drivers are commonplace. Running a 64-bit OS is more secure because it supports things like mandatory driver signing, hardware-based DEP, kernel patch protection, etc.
And there are other useful technologies post-XP Windows versions support: SSD TRIM, DirectX10 and later, improved software firewall, touch support, IPv6, all or none of which might be important to you!
Aaaaand then there's the differences in user interface. I still prefer the XP UI over later incarnations. 7 isn't too bad. But the UIs in 8 and 10 are an abomination as far as I'm concerned!
I've only just got rid of XP on my main PC. I hardly ever used it and when you've got 12GB RAM, running a 32-bit OS without PAE support just feels really slow!0 -

Yeah. Since they're not a charity, it makes you wonder what the ulterior motive must be...0 -

You can use Open office or Libre Office on Windows 10, so your argument falls down somewhat?Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

My employer and my children's schools all run on Microsoft products so you always seem to end up with some sort of problem if you only have linux machines. I don't just have one PC.0
