Other bits and pieces are getting shut down losing support etc .Internet Explorer for one and probably many more for legacy Windows versions .
Internet Explorer is supported for as long as the operating system is, as long as you don't hang on to an older version of IE than will run.

So IE9 for instance is still supported on Vista, until Vista itself goes out of support, because IE9 can't be upgraded further on Vista.

I still have TrueCrypt installed to protect my hard drive against casual theft.
So presumably if I accidentally click on 'install' on the W10 nags, my laptop will get converted into a doorstop due to the encrypted bootloader. I've got to decrypt the entire HD before upgrading to W10 which will be a pain.

But what's really putting me off is not having the media to
    a) Install Windows 10 from scratch on a formatted disk.
    b) Reinstall Windows 7 if I need to (e..g I discover that my graphics card is not properly supported by W10).
I just don't trust MS to be of any help if things go pear shaped - to me installation DVDs and a license key are the only real insurance.

I don't know - Truecrypt didn't even get around to supporting Windows 10 so you'd definitely be on your own.
In your shoes I'd be decrypting before I started too.

It's easy enough to download and create your own media for Windows 10.

You might be able to do the same with Windows 7, depending on your product key:

Alternatively you could take a full backup image of the computer (I guess in its unencrypted form) using something like Macrium Reflect Free. Then you could go back to where you were if something went wrong.

On it's how to create a W10 installation DVD page,
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10
where first step is to download & run the tool for this, MS confusingly says

"If you’re upgrading the device that you downloaded the tool on, select Upgrade this PC now.
    -or-
If you want to create media to upgrade a different device, select Create installation media for another PC."

So I guess that 'different' can also apply to my current machine...

    then it says

"If you haven’t upgraded to Windows 10 yet and perform a clean installation, you’ll need to enter a qualifying product key for Windows 7"

Well I guess that the Product Key on the sticker underneath the laptop (it's probably an OEM license) will do. But how would I be sure?

Yes it can - it works just as well if you select the 'different device' option but then use that media on the same device.

Well I would always advise having a backup before you start a major upgrade anyway, which would give you a way back.

Do you want to perform a clean installation, or have it do an upgrade install and keep the software you're currently running?

If the latter, then you could save the installer to media, but still run setup.exe from there from within Windows, and you shouldn't need to enter a product key.

Also even if you perform an 'upgrade' installation from media, when it asks you what you want to keep, you can say 'keep nothing'.

Once upgraded and you're sure Windows 10 has activated, any clean install from then on should recognise your hardware and activate automatically.

The key on the bottom of your laptop, theoretically, has not ever been utilised. Another system will have been utilised to activate your machine. The key on the underside is not the one that has been utilised to activate your machine. Though on the other hand, the key on the underside of your machine has been blocked from online activation.
Either way, you can simply use the gatherosstate application to activate Windows 10, without the need for entering the product licence code.

Windows 7 is a dead man walking. It will go the same way as XP and the rest.

Same with Windows 10. Mainstream support for Windows 10 ends in 2020, with extended support ending in 2025.
