  • I can also say that it is probably not/possibly not/maybe a Windows 10 problem, it could be an update to the WiFi card that has been installed, or even a loose cable to the card from the aerial ...Straw clutching appears suddenly:beer:

can't argue too much with kb's post above, maybe with some tweaks...
    1. bell wire/internal wiring/extensions/microfilters definitely need revisiting, even though op recons this was all gone through not long back. Agree bell wire in isolation shouldn't account for the poor sync, but a combination of all the factors mentioned could.
    2.
    change wifi channel
    3. need to talk to ISP to get profile flushed through and reset.
    3. re-post line stats when these have been done

on the lappy, I wonder what wifi card is in the lappy? Also, how's it set up in terms of static/auto IP addy, which DNS servers are you using? This would be useful info, and it may be worth setting the wifi card for auto IP, and try OpenDNS and Opal servers (208.67.220.220 and 195.12.4.247.

I would hope the op will post back with the requested info and after he's done the things we've suggested before putting it down to the W10 wifi gremlin ;):D

One other thing against the bellwire being a major issue....

The stats were posted and so presumably taken around midday. Bellwire pickup is mostly MW radio stations that come in a lot stronger during the hours of darkness. I'd expect stats taken midday where there had been an initial sync or a forced resync during the evening to a lower rate to show a pretty large noise margin as the noise dropped back during the day. Those stats show pretty close to the 6dB default. If this were a single nearby transmitter it would certainly knock out a few bins but I doubt it could have the effect the stats show.

good point, well put :) Thinking back to my adsl days, Radio Cymru transmitter cost me around half a meg at around 3/4 of a mile, so a local to the op wouldn't cost him 8-10meg...

IP profile flush could be the save on the line issue....

    ...now, for the lappy... :D

I'm pretty much certain that the lappy problem is down to WiFi. The router is on the floor behind a sofa and the lappy is used further from it than the phones. The OP says there are competing signals on the same channel. The signal strength isn't all that high - I have neighbour's APs showing higher than he says he gets.

I'm guessing it's a Technicolor TG582n and from the looks of it they have no external antenna which won't help.

I wouldn't rule out anything on the ADSL. My favourite would be something unfiltered but it could even be a duff linecard port.
  • Will try and give fuller answers tomorrow but probably more like Tuesday but couple of points...

Router is technicolour model mentioned with no aerial but phones work all over the house including where the laptop is usually used whilst the laptop doesn't work well even right but the router (where I am now). Since I started this thread the router has been at the side of the settee (essentially the same position but just not tucked behind, not sure if that will make a difference).

No alarm, sky, anything, just the phone and router. Not sure what is meant by "extensions" but certainly no TV or alarm linked to the phoneline (got a smart TV which links to the router and come to think of it, that works fine too actually).

If that's the case I refer back to my previous answer of a W10 update borking the wifi card driver in the lappy..... via device manager can you roll the driver back to the previous version?

More likely it is using a Microsoft generic Driver though, worth checking the Card's manufacturer

  • How would I know what the wi-fi card is?
  • Could it be "Broadcom80211n?
