I suspect that it's going to be down to w10 and it's p*ss-poor networking software. For example, no matter what I do I cannot get an older hp laptop to connect to a certain SSID, and it's been since a w10 update several weeks ago.

I'm assuming you've turned off the wifi sharing options on the lappy?

GunJack - what do you make of the abysmal sync for the line attenuation. Worst I've ever seen and not the result of a cap judging by the noise margin. (stats posted earlier)

Also why no FEC errors - fastpath or have they got fed up with people complaining about the millions these routers report and had the firmware hacked to omit them?

ey up kb :) The sync looks awful, if it's not a reporting error then I'd be looking at bell wire removal, see here:-

    http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/socket.htm

along with changing microfilters as a starting point.

OP, can you give a brief description of how/where your router is connected? e.g. is it actually in the master socket? If so, take the faceplate off and plug the router into the test socket (can be seen when you remove the faceplate) and re-post your line stats. It is highly possible there's some not-so-great internal wiring going on there, plus not every phone socket may have a microfilter on it. Double-filtering a sky box (if it's plugged into the phone line) can also still help on occasion, but less of an issue than it used to be.

I may have missed it but do we know which router the op's using? I would suspect fastpath - the question is, has that been set deliberately due to his low attenuation, or has his profile hung somewhere along the line? I suggest a call to the ISP to request a change to interleaved, at least until the reason for the poor sync is identified and dealt with....and a profile flush-out..

I've just scanned back over the thread, and I've got some observations...

    1. It looks like there's two distinct issues going on here, firstly the laptop performance, secondly the broadband performance.

    2. Plusnet, so an IPStream connection. IIRC they mainly give out Technicolour routers, not too bad bits of kit, but certainly not the worst.

    3. I still have my suspicions of W10's seeming lack of ability for networking, especially on older network cards, but we'll keep that one to one side for now.

edit - !!!!!!, just noticed the op's away until next week, will have to remember to check back here then :(

    4. sort the bb out first, then worry about the lappy. Some of the pups removed earlier may have added a proxy server to the network connection, so best check that too when we get to it...

  • Sorry Gunny and Kwikbreaks ...phones are working OK according to the OP surely the problem is with the Laptop . Garybarlowsbeard have you used a cable to the router? or have you used the lappy outside of the home before the problems started?
I know W10 is a bit of an unknown generally (I haven't used it much outside of my wifi zone, plus I prefer Linux on my lappy), but given phones work ok then ??.

 @ dcm - this was my first impression, as stated earlier - after one lot of w10 updates I cannot for the life of me even get an intel 3945 wifi card to connect to one specific SSID that it was quite happy with before. Whilst I agree the poor bb performance is probably not the cause of the timeout errors, there are still proxys/poor dns that could be. More than one problem going on here....

  • Yeah GJ lots going on but we still need more info to be honest, eg is GBB got a new W10 or an upgrade? But looking back on the thread wired seems OK , I just wonder if the wifi card is losing sync with the home wifi and then is trying other (stronger or non-existent) signals.....

I get that it's an older machine (been okay for a few years) and some W10 updates have borked the networking. On my HP W10 testbed, as stated a few weeks ago the W10 update denied the use of one network completely, last week or so's update means that I cannot connect to the other SSID until I manually disable and re-enable the wifi card  every time I boot the lappy  effin' W10

  • Sorry, just had a quick look at this but no time to answer/go into everything now and loads of questions but:

    Old laptop
W10 has worked fine for months (upgrade)
    technicolour router
had issues with external wiring and Plusnet/BT came out to first sort wire at telegraph pole then second wire into house but in eliminating internal problems at that state I did all the stuff with micrfilters and test socket and since they were out everything was fine
connection works ok on wired no err_ message but still slower than used to be.

Sorry, will look/answer/post more fully on Monday (though may have some catching up to do from weekend) but would be great if could have a consensus on what next step should be.

And, again, really appreciate all your time and help with this.

On the bellwire thing - I've seen removal alter sync by maybe 1Mbps or so but never reduce a potential 16Mbs+ down to 9Mbps so I think it has to be more than that which is why I suggested calling ISP rather than fiddling with it. Given the OPs reluctance to install a program or switch a WiFi channel it would probably be wasted electrons anyway.

There are certainly 2 issues - poor sync and poor laptop WiFi performance. I'm rather dismissing the fact that the phones apparently work OK as the OP has already mentioned that the laptop gets used further from the router than the phones probably are which is why I was interested to see what signal strength a phone app reports from the same location as the laptop.

    ===

I've been thinking about the sync problem. Although I don't believe that there could be enough noise pickup on a bellwire to account for the huge sync reduction I do think it is possible that there is something permanently connected (ie not a phone) that could be unfiltered.

So GBB - are there any extensions at all?
Are they hard wired or plug in types? Plugin extensions other than those to a router (which should be avoided) need to be filtered at the master socket end.
Do you have a Sky box or burglar alarm connected to the phone line without a filter?
Fixing this issue will almost certainly not fix the laptop timeout problems though unless it is caused by a faulty router which also gives a poor WiFi signal and both of those are unlikely anyway.

The timeouts may be fixed by a change of WiFi channel but more likely also require some re-positioning of the router to improve the signal path. I have my own router behind a sofa but it is on a flower stand along with a plant that also lives there. A more permanent fix would be to run an ethernet cable or more expensively by using homeplugs. All that presumes that GunJack's W10 issues haven't struck here too. I've got 3 W10 machines (all upgrades) that have no WiFi problems so it certainly isn't a universal problem.
