    Could it be "Broadcom80211n?
Could be. Type ncpa.cpl in the Cortana search box (bottom left) and you will find the wireless device name. Have we been here before? What's the full model number of laptop?

Broadcom will be the chipset rather than the manufacturer. The free version of Speccy may be a bit more specific. Probably a right click on the Windows (button bottom left) selecting device manager, finding the WiFi under network connections and right clicking to properties may give the answer too.

I'd suggest you try what I suggested a few posts back and install a WiFi app on your phone and see what that reports the signal strength as too.

First thing to try though is still - change the wifi channel.
  • I've loaded wi-fi sweetspots to my phone...not sure what I was supposed to try and sat at my desk its giving a speed of around 30Mbps, perhaps even mid-30s.

Is there a different/better mobile app?

This one works well for me - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farproc.wifi.analyzer there is a helper app it will suggest which will allow you to connect to a hotspot directly from the app but that is pretty irrelevant to this issue.

One question I don't think has been asked - when did the timeouts first start appearing - before or after installing W10. If after immediately after or after some update or other.

It's the signal strength I'm interested in not some supposed connection speed which is actually pretty low considering an 802.11g working at full steam would show 54Mbps and an 802.11n which I'm guessing you should have would be 150Mbps (or higher with a better router).

I've selected WiFi sweet spots for install on my phone and will take a look at what it says about my speeds to get some idea exactly what it means by speed. It can't be an actual speed test as your internet only delivers 9Mbps. My router will deliver 300Mbps. Some go as high as 900Mbps I think but probably only on 5GHz.

OK WiFi SweetSpots. I'm not sure what it is measuring but it is probably pinging the AP and reporting speeds based on that. Close to my router it was reporting 45Mbps and I moved away until it was down to around 10Mbps. An Ookla speedtest from that point showed 20Mbps, So it looks like its probably a useful survey tool but the numbers don't mean a lot. Given my connection was fine at a far lower number than you are seeing suggest the router signal at that point is OK and does indeed point to the laptop itself.

I cant find a direct iOS equivalent. Have got Net Anazlyzer but can'#t see the sort of stats you wanted on there.

The timeouts started a good few months after W10 was installed.

Have tried a few others but none showing signal strength. one from offcom said wi-fi was ok but no details given beyond that.

Do you have an Android phone as well? It may be that IoS doesn't make the actual signal strength available to apps.

It could be that it was a Windows update then or it could be it has nothing to do with Windows 10 at all.

The antenna leads clip on to WiFi cards pretty firmly and there should always be a bit of slack. I'm loathe to believe it is a physical problem with the card and antenna so if it isn't competing signals and a channel change doesn't sort it I'm pretty much at an end of my debugging path now and running an ethernet cable or using homeplugs seem to be the only options left. Try the channel change.
  • Ok, thanks, I'll try the channel change now and check on my wife's android tonight if that doesn't fix it.
  • Ok, tried channel 6 which few people are on and no obvious ddifference but should I post any stats again now I'm on 6?

I did intimate it, even if I didn't ask it directly ;) In this (my) lappy's case, it was W10 updates just before or just after xmas that duffed the wifi - it had been fine up until that point, on wifi at least (I still have needed to reinstall sound drivers AGAIN since).....

wifi channel won't alter your line stats, so not much point. Hijack your wife's android phone and install wifi analyser on it :D
