So next step is check on Android? But (to someone who knows nothing) I dont understand why there is a relcutance to view this as a hardware issue with the laptop itself?

because in all likelyhood it isn't... it's more likely a software driver issue in combination with some W10 updates...that's probably the issue between laptop and router/internet....

we've not seriously got to the poor internet sync yet....

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
  • so some sort of restore/reset might be worth trying now? Is there a way to do that that won't mess with other things (eg saved documents)?

If it is the driver I wonder if that Driver Booster programme I disparaged in a different thread may suggest an update which would sort it out.
    ====
You could just rollback the driver easily enough but I suspect W10 with its non-optional updates would simply undo that

if it's any consolation, neither the Intel one or SlimDrivers (my weapon of choice in this area) could find a better driver for mine :(

Always, but ALWAYS back everything up before you start such operations......

Haven't we gone through this already too? Either
    1. system restore to a previous point in time (keeps data)

    or
    2. Windows 10 refresh (keeps data)

  • Would you advise this and if so which one? I was wary of losing any recent software changes too, especially as have done some (possibly) helpful stuff during this process, such as removing some PUP things (?!) and adding some stuff too.

If I was gonna "back up" everything...hoiw would I do that? This is really starting to !!!! me off now. Appreciate everyone's help but is there anywhere I could go to just pay someone to fix it?
  • I got impatient and did a restore to the last available date which wasn't actually that long ago anyway (not sure if before or after issues started). It seems to have !!!!led everything up but have reinstalled avast and chrome so hopefully that was the extent of the damage. Checking wife's phone for wi-fi signal now.

Far far did you go back? Presumably before Chrome and Avast were installed? (ps Windows 10 has its own anti-virus). So...what about wifi...
  • It was only back as far as 22 jan I think. Chrome and avast were there but not working and couldn't seem to do anything so uninstalled/fixed.

Using wife's android I'm getting a wi-fi signal of -40 to -30 in the lounge near the router and around -70 in the office where the laptop would be.

Maybe the clash between windowns defender or whatever it is and avast was stopping things working after the restore? I don't know, I'm losing the plot somewhat! That could be what 3 days of heavy drinking coupled with IT issues does.
