Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton
  • It's a normal bodily function. I really don't see why people get embarrassed or funny about it? Surely if you're comfortable enough in front of a partner, things like that shouldn't phase anybody.

I find it extraordinary that people would go out of the room especially.

Thank god I am not the only one who read the lyrics that way! its why I cant help giggling at that point.
I think its polite not to fart in front of your partner - though sometimes it just cant be helped.
HOWEVER - do not fart in bed and hold the duvet over partners head while laughing your socks off. OH used to do that - until I threw up over him. then I stalked off and slept in spare room while he cleaned up. He never did it again!
  • My uncle used to fart in to the back of a hairdryer when switched on, hence blowing it all round the room

The day that one farts in front of their partner is always considered a milestone in any relationship. I remember my first time...

It couldn't be helped and it had to come out. It was loud and vibrant and there certainly was an echo. My girlfriend was livid, I could see the rage building up in her expression. Her parents didn't seem to mind so much, almost as if they were pretending it never happened. The rest of the congregation were not so polite and there were many tuttings and mutterings.

    Still... there'll be other funerals.

:rotfl::T Made me laugh that did! :D

Never, I know everyone has wind but I think it shows an utter disrespect for your partner. My views are probably tempered by how I was brought up. I can not remember either of my parents farting.

Really? I am sure you parents did fart!

And I have to disagree that farting in front of your partner is disrespectful. It's a normal thing to do. As normal as sneezing or hiccuping. What's more, it can't be helped.

Sorry? So you never ever ever fart in front of your husband?

And why does it show a lack of dignity to fart in front of your partner? I don't mean you have to sit there rattling them off all day, but I don't see a massive issue with popping out the odd one. What do you do if you need to fart? Run outside? And as I said, it can't be helped, and it's a natural thing to do.

I agree Georgie. I don't think it's a wonderful and lovely thing to do, especially if it smells, but it can't be helped, and the idea of being in a long term relationship and never breaking wind in front of your partner is bizarre.

I can't fathom being with someone for 20-30 years plus, and never being able to fart in front of them. I can't get my head around it. Surely after that many years together, you should feel comfortable enough to break wind in front of your partner?

I imagine people who won't fart in front of their partner, to also not shower in front of them, not do a number 2 when they're in the house, and not get undressed in front of them either. They must be very conservative and staid. I would struggle being married to someone like this. Each to their own I guess.

If you aren't farting during the day - you're probably doing them all in bed when you're asleep :-0
  • Can someone please tell my dog that its unacceptable to fart in front of others then. He has no shame :rotfl:
