    Yes you will.

The police log every incident which is reported.

They may log every incident but unless there's a recordable crime committed there's no crime number.

What recordable crime do you suggest has been committed at this stage and where? The ops local force will not record and issue a crime number for offences committed elsewhere in the uk.

We got a log number, not sure if that's the same thing as a crime number though.

It's not, guest101 is confused as to what a "crime number" is.

    Dosn't matter, you've created a record.

    Now to prove your vehicle hasn't moved;
are there any recent service records with a mileage figure on them? an MOT?
take a picture (time & date stamped) of the current mileage
what condition is the vehicle in? If it's been standing still for 6 months, then is there obvious evidence of this (tyres etc) again, take pictures.

How rare a model, & would it be obvious? Think if it would be obvious based on a grainy still from a cctv camera.

As it was recovered I would suggest they have more than grainy cctv stills. All police recoveries are photographed one would assume the DVLA ones are the same, to save any comeback on the recovery agent.

With the DVLA it's simple, you either go to court (where they will likely lose) or you pay up.

I am just impressed you managed to phone your MP and speak to them! You must be neighbours, or you own a shoe shop!

"So when a vehicle is impounded ( on false plates or otherwise), they will just hand it over for the release fee, you don't need produce a V5, insurance, any form of ID, or pay the tax owing"

I doubt they accept cash either. So who's name is the card in?

Also for the car to be released I would assume they had to tax it. Check and see if your sons car is now taxed. Google check car is taxed. If so they have docs for your car,but must still be in your sons name as they are chasing him. If it isn't taxed it might just be a wrong registration number has been keyed in at some point and it's an entirely different car that was seen untaxed.

Thanks again everyone for your input, yes we've got a couple of photos of the car in the lock up looking quiet shabby now, tyre pressure is right down, battery flat as you would expect, but it would be drivable with a little effort so proving you didn't get in it and drive it to Swansea on the said day seems almost impossible.
As I mentioned earlier it feels like DVLA are employing similar tactics to the private parking companies, I've asked them for a photo of the clamped car in my letter, this should sort it once and for all, I doubt very much if it will turn out to be a black 3 door VW Golf 4 motion, with lowered suspension, and a debadged boot, but then I suppose their photo quality will need to be reasoably decent.
We have a MOT from mid March 2015, and a service receipt August 2014 with the milage on, verages out at 107 miles per week between those periods.
We've just worked out that he taxed his new car on 1st May 2015 so stopped using the VW Golf then, and it was in the lock up taxed but not used till the end of September, then it was Sorn'ed and as said previously, it hasn't been moved or started since then.
And yes 'Mark the shark' this is the whole truth, I can see what your implying, but your very wrong.
Now we have those dates and mileages im much happier that if we do end up in court the DVLA won't have any case.
Im going to check the milometer reading when it's light tomorrow, im hoping that the current milage is less than the distance to Swansea from home and back again, (232 miles each way) since the last Mot.
