Your dog probably eats better food than me.0 -
I buy Applaws graIn free for my GSD. By shopping around, I can get it about £53 for a 12 kg bag. She works her way through just under a bag a month.0

Feral Moon - you may be interested in this site because she set it up because her dog suffered allergies caused by commercial dog food.
I use it to buy for my cats and make sure that all cat food has no veg or carbohyrates other than natural animal fat.

You may find that there is similar near you but I think she also delivers?
She has really large dogs (I know because they are there with plenty of room to wander around when I go to shop)0 -

So am I. That is probably more than we spend on food ourselves. Granted a dog is part of the family but when we just about buy steak mince for ourselves, we ain't going to expand and buy the dog a box for himself either; we have to be realistic.
Arden Grange is £30 from Amazon and that lasts 3 weeks for around 12KG plus then any treats each week (typically ham for training) and it adds up.
The cat meanwhile eats Aldi food at 39p a can. He is happy (I think!).0 -
Thanks guys and I mean this sincerely. You've probably seen my from my other posts, I'm no spend thrift and always looking for a bargain and a way to get the best for my money.
Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be the Aldi equivalent when it comes to buying raw food for our dogs. I've already steered clear of the mass produced stuff and DIY my own diet for him as cheaply as I possibly can. Like I said, once breeding season starts again then I can shoot as many rabbits as I want and this is free food, as well as his favourite. So, on balance feeding up to £100 a month during winter on dead raw food is necessary..
Just out of interest, I priced up how much it would cost me to feed him on a commercial grain free dry diet and they all came in more expensive!0 -

What breed, age and size is your dog?
ETA: I've just priced up Arden Grange and to feed my dog on their recommended volumes it would cost almost £90 a month not to mention the vets bills for then treating him for the allergies he has due to the extra ingredients included.0 -

Thank you, I'll have a look at her site. I source from various places at the moment so also have to factor in at least £10 a month in courier charges. I've recently been able to locally source lamb/ox tripe for £1/kg delivered free which will drastically reduce my costs especially once rabbit breeding season starts as he'll happily eat a whole bunny for dinner (his favourite) which I pay local farmers boy 50p a rabbit. So my costs really are seasonal and what I quoted earlier is top end if I have to buy it all in.
I mean yeah, I could go to my local pet store and buy their version of raw food (Natures Menue, Nutriment etc) which is almost 50% vegetable pulp so is no better than buying a commercial wet/dry cooked food but costs me twice as much. They are just jumping on the raw food band wagon and no better than mass produced commercial dog foods in my opinion.0 -
In Lidl, the tinned mackerel at 59p is lovely, tastes better and is cheaper than branded and unbranded mackerel in other supermarkets. When it's on offer, it's even cheaper!0

He is 19 months old, approx 35KG and a German Shepherd. We find the 12KG lasted 3 weeks; I probably feed a bit less than recommended and the vet has no issues with weight.0
