Reading your diary SSS makes me very glad that Dr Dragon is with me all the way on money issues! We do enjoy the occasional nice meal out (taxis there and back, good wine etc) but we budget for it! and whilst Dr Dragon isn't working we are using our savings to pay for all the essentials (with the very, VERY occasional trip to the pub!), hopefully he will be working again soon and then we can get the ISAs built back up and then have a treat :D

Best of luck SSS and good luck clearing everything and then getting some savings sorted!
Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons, for thou art crunchy and good with catsup :D

  • £59 cleared into bank from e-bay today so I will transfer that to my e-saver before OH spends it.
I have paid £1.59 off MBNA card as my payment a day challenge.
will have to pay £9 today for DS karate but that is accounted for and will be paid with child benefit.
I have a washer dryer and the dryer takes ages and has given up today, I saw something called a dri buddi by JML it looks good has anyone used one? I would get dryer fixed but it takes all day to dry one load and I havnt got the room for a separate dryer, I do line dry if I can but the weather here is horrid and will get worse over the months.I need to wash every day with the children.
  • I have also joined a paid survey site called its your views, dont know if I will make much but every little helps.
I will be using quidco more over the next few months whilst christmas shopping so will build up a bit there im expecting £14 to be paid from them soon so that will go in the e-saver.
  • Hi SSS,

I came across your thread today and feel relieved that I am not the only one with OH/money issues! It seems alot of us suffer! Well done for getting so far and keep up the studying!

My OH moved in with me a year and a half ago and at the time was on incap benefit so very limited income - I was (and still am) studying full time but had a few part time jobs etc to make ends meet... they only just did and when I suggested OH gave me housekeeping he looked at m as if I was an alien! eventually he reluctantly agreed to give me £100 a fortnight, leaving him with 'just' £20 a week pocket money... of course it was a struggle but I kept on plodding along and even gave him a few pounds extra here and there as he always managed to spend it even though he wasn't working! Then, last september we had a baliffs letter, about the council tax. I had notified them that my partner had moved in and as I was a student had been previously exempt foolishly thought that as were on poverty line with his only income being incap, that we might be entitled to council tax benefit... it appears not, and my OH failed to open any letters addressed to him including the magistrates order! We now owe £500 in council tax arears and costs march- sept, and approx £1200 from last sept to end of this council tax period - of course I had to try and sort it out with letters/payment offers etc...The CSA also claim he owes a chunk...
I'm fortunate in that I receive a bursary to study and so now cannot work extra (one of my uni's conditions and don't really have time anyway with a small child at home too) but, OH got a job two months ago and eventually agreed to pay me half of the household outgoings each month - I have to 'nag' for this though.... he doesn't seem to feel obliged to make up for me supporting him for over a year and now I am struggling to keep afloat - he moans that he needs the extra money so that he can feel a man (apparantly I'm the man in this house!) and thinks nothing of buying a coffee each morning, lunch every day and a few pints each night! Also, he now refuses to do any housework as he 'works all day'...arghhhhh
How can I get through to him without 1) nagging like his mum 2) making him feel that I'm the man in the house and 3) going mad myself!!!!

keep up the posts - gives me hope!!!:D

    Hi,

have you got enough room for an airer on a pulley? I got one a few years back when we got a utility room and it's been great. No matter the weather you haul it up and the washing dries remarkably quickly.

  • I havnt really got enough room, I have 2 bathrooms but they arnt very big and no utility room. Its a bit of a weird house its 3 big bedrooms, large lounge and fair dining room but the kitchen and bathrooms are quite small.Last year in the winter OH kept putting clothes all over the radiators it looked so untidy and made the house all steamy. We cant afford to do that anymore with the price of gas anyway.
I think il try and get the JML one off ebay a bit cheaper and get the dryer fixed for doing smaller items. It took 2hrs once to dry a towel.
Matureoxstudent, it takes time and you have to work slowly at these men.I suppose im the man in my house I control all the money and cards, OH was resistant at first but I think he quite likes not having the responsibility now, he is still a hopeless spender but he has to run it by me now.
Lots of people told me to get rid of him but apart from his spending habits he is a lovely funny man and a wonderful father and he works really hard.
Im not the easiest person to live with either im a typical gemini split personality.what are you studying? I had a bursery when I was a student nurse.

Today I have been approved for a tesco credit card with 0% BT for 14 months and OH has too (I informed him of this) so when the cards come il be cancelling the others and saving lots of interest.
  • OH asked this evening if he could have £10 to spend on e-bay, I asked him what he wanted to buy and he said he didnt know he would look and see.Isnt that something a little boy would say?
He probably wants a batman toy, did I tell you he took himself off to the pics last week to watch it (on his own) and the star wars cartoon.
Some nice news as well today OH and I will be being godparents to our nephew in October, we are both made up.Hes so gorgeous and cuddly (nephew not OH).
Id better get saving OH will need a bank loan to get rigged out for the day lol.
