I do wish all the people of the UK well for the future, except you that is - I don't wish you ill either, I just plain don't care

Yolina, I feel you are taking this all a wee bit personally. Would you like me to take you out for a glass of wine (French of course as whilst we are still in the EU French wine is protected by the high tariffs on those nice new world wines from poorer countries like Chile and South Africa).

I am sure it will all feel better with a nice chat and the realisation we don't actually hate Europeans but just want to be part of the whole world of nations not just a fortress United States of Europe.

If you're looking to apportion blame & accusations of galactic stupidity, rather than aim at the 17 million + people who voted to Leave, you might want to consider looking in the direction of those who run the EU. It was their insistence on ever closer union and ever greater power for Brussels, something that the vast majority of us have never even had a chance to vote on, that led to a referendum vote. And it was their total refusal to even cede a fraction of that power back to the UK when Cameron went begging, that led directly to where we are now.

They were indeed, galactically stupid. And now they'll have to face the consequences. And those will be far more than simply the UK quitting the EU.

A fair point, although one might also look to the UK Government for an explanation of why they approached the problem in the way it did.

I am not trying to blame 17 million people, a large number of them had a legitimate viewpoint, just stating how I feel about the outcome. But there are many who voted who have no idea why they voted to leave.

But suppose you are right that the EU has been stupid in not giving us better terms, that is not a reason for leaving. Wanting to stop Freedom of Movement is at least a reason.

if a member chooses not to follow it then it would probably annoy the EU but provided the UK met its obligations they would not be able to do anything about it.

Ah that's an interesting point - wondering if that could explain what Rinoa pointed out a few post back about the UK seemingly not being invited to the next informal meeting? A "you might as well hand in your notice or we'll keep charging you but without invites to meetings" kinda thing.

It's only Clapton who gets on my nerves ;) and I only have so much patience.

You might not believe this, but *whispers* I don't like wine :D Seriously the smell, particularly of red wine, makes me instantly nauseous. The only I use I have for wine is cooking with :p

I can not see that having a single market requires freedom of movement, I would have thought tax harmonisation which is not in place would be more important. Free movement seems to be all about the politics of ever closer union (=US of E). If the EU really wanted to allow different speeds for different members then it could have compromised on free movement.

I think that people will take this personally. This is a momentous decision (one that has profound consequences) that many who voted for it have absolutely no idea of the implications of their actions. I am sure you did but you are not the norm.

We are a deeply divided nation and saying that can be cured by a "nice chat" might help Yolina, but I can understand how someone who has chosen to live in the country for many years would be unhappy.

Six months ago the idea that I would soon be applying for an Irish Passport and planning to move to Ireland never occurred to me.
