http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-38762034 The level of educational attainment was the most significant factor:- 'The data confirms previous indications that local results were strongly associated with the educational attainment of voters - populations with lower qualifications were significantly more likely to vote Leave. (The data for this analysis comes from one in nine wards) The level of education had a higher correlation with the voting pattern than any other major demographic measure from the census.' I believe those less well educated are more likely to believe the relevance of simplistic arguments on 'immigration numbers' or 'loss of sovereignty', 'taking back control' etc. Trite, simplistic arguments won the day against the more amorphous, internationalist, technocratic views of the remainers.

Ah,now I see where you're coming from. Only the Aryan master race should have been allowed to vote in the referendum.

Now where have I heard that before?

I myself have just signed up for my local voluntary euthanasia clinic, they're springing up in all the non-metropolitian areas in England apparently.

Don't shoot the messenger. Everyone has their own take on this issue depending on their world view etc and we all try to justify our beliefs/views with anecdotal 'experience'............that's why it's more interesting to look at independent analysis of the demographics of the vote. I just think the less well educated would tend to be more attracted to simple, easily understood arguments about 'taking back control, 'immigration numbers reducing resources', 'getting back our sovereignty' etc. Many felt let down, left behind by an elite and what better example of this elite could be found in the EU monolith that controls our lives and stops us achieving our dreams. Farage has made a career pressing these buttons of resentment.....that's what that poster was about. He conflated two separate issues, (immigration and the refugee crisis) and manipulated the minds of the lesser educated by showing them in simple terms how their lives would be better once we'd left the EU.......because we would then get to see our GP earlier.....because then I'd get housing easier etc etc. People who were better educated would see through this charade of course but all Farage and his lackeys had to do is call his opponents out as elitist snobs who have no idea about the hopes and dreams of ordinary people. Very simple and completely wrong but it proved to be effective!

I've started reading "The Road To Somewhere, The populist revolt and the future of politics" by David Goodhart and it is truly excellent.

He describes the Brexit vote as "decent populism", far removed from fascism. He finds that there are three broad groups of people in the UK. The largest group he calls "somewheres" most of whom voted leave. Somewheres account for c50% of the population. A further 25% of the population he calls "anywheres", internationalist minded individuals who are comfortable moving around the world. Most politicians for the past 30 years, plus key figures in the elite, such as BBC heads and senior civil servants, also share this world view. A further twenty five per cent he describes as "inbetweeners", showing shades of both.

One interesting point describes someone from the anyone camp waking up the morning after Brexit and feeling that they did not recognise the country that they were living in. He contrasted this with those who voted Brexit because they no longer recognised the country that they were living in.

And that's just a summary of the first chapter and leaves lots out. My point being... well worth a read.

Have you got to the chapter where they tackle The Racists yet?

There is not as far as I can see a specific chapter on that. He argues that racists and xenophobes make up c5% of the total. Don't have the book with me so not sure if that's c5% of voters or 5% f those who he considers somewheres. The next chapter covers "good, bad and ugly" populism, so it may be covered there.

I think most people find racism repugnant, whether they are on the remain or leave side.

Yes, I read that the other day. It was really spot on. I would say I am an Inbetweener, but I share a lot of values with Anywheres and I have been to uni and have grown up in London. It also made me feel guilty as I have said some of the patronising things that other Remainers have said.:o It made me feel like I understood more what some Leave voters thought and why they voted in the way they did.

Thanks, that's exactly how I feel. I really liked where he talked about the "liberal elite" being socially liberal and economically liberal, but not particularly politically liberal... closing down the concerns of people who think differently and dismissing them.

Leanne Wood, according to you, is an idiot and you can't comprehend why anyone would be stupid enough to vote for her. However the exact same people you (not me) are calling stupid voted for Brexit but that's evidence they have a lot of common sense.

For those people in the constituency who preferred the Plaid Cymru manifesto to Labour's or the Tories' it would have been hobson's choice.

Did Moby say anything like this? I think not.

In a democracy being thick or gullible does not disqualify you from voting o make your opinion any less valid. But it may well influence the results.
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.
