Scotland is the largest European export market for the rest of the UK and the second largest in the world.
Here's all the countries in the world rUK can trade with post-brexit, tariff free.
The interesting point is that should Iscotland join the Eu, scotland will NOT be able to agree a zero tariff with roUK as your sovereignty will be lost to the EU.
The roUK could, if they wish, levy a zero tariff on imports from scotland but not the other way round.
the rofuk would of course be able to import products from 190 countries without tariffs, if they wished.0 -

I don't think you understand the way hamish's one-stat game works.0 -
Ah it's one-stat Hamish.
Ok I'll play.
Scottish exports to rUK : 48.5 Billion
Scottish exports to rEU : 11.6 Billion
Remind me again why you think Scotland should leave the U.K.
To be fair to Hamish, he's always said that Scotland should remain in the UK.
Unless that's changed now too?0 -

Keep up graham, hamish is now a fully paid up Indy supporter.0 -

Because according to HMRC data your claim is incorrect:
https://www.uktradeinfo.com/Statistics/RTS/Pages/default.aspx
£21.8 billion of Scottish imports when the rest of the UK exports £231.6 billion cannot possibly equate to Scotland being "the largest European export market for the rest of the UK and the second largest in the world" can it?
Because even if Scotland imported nothing from anywhere other than rUK it would equal under 10% of the rUK's exports.
From my link:
42 billion from Scotland to rUK. 52 billion from England to Scotland. Scotland the only country in the UK at the present time in trade surplus, and most figures even then exclude oil and gas.
I don't want to drag this thread any further into a Scottish debate, but when trade figures or stats are bandied about context is always good. Scotland is an important trading partner for England/rUK. It's one of England's biggest export destinations ( after USA ) and this should be borne in mind.
Scottish exports are up across the board and this is a good thing, not some kind of huge weakness as it seems some are trying to turn it into. Especially when it comes to hypothetical future trade. It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?0 -

Scotland unlike England/Wales still has the luxury of options should independence happen. Joining the EEA/EFTA being one of them should trade between England and Scotland look like becoming prohibitive. Is unlikely as this would mean that England/Wales have gotten themselves a truly crap deal from the EU or none at all... but there you go.
Is probably why Sturgeon has made the Single Market a red line rather than the EU. Keeps future options open.

Regardless of which side of the Remain/Leave divide you lean towards, nobody can argue this is one of the more interesting times in recent history.
The Brexit vote followed by the election of Trump has challenged many of the accepted norms.
The trouble is 'may you live in interesting times' is supposed to be a curse!'I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my father. Not screaming and terrified like his passengers.' (Bob Monkhouse).
Sky? Believe in better.
Note: win, draw or lose (not 'loose' - opposite of tight!)0 -
Incredible that you're bringing those indy lies into this thread when a few days ago I gave you a link to someone who had analysed it and found that the protagonists were being - as usual with indy - economical with the truth.
Are you going to correct what you've told everyone about trade between England and Scotland or will I have to?0 -

As much as I think that Scotland should take an opportunity to become part of the EEA, I I am not at all convinced that it will happen. Still cannot see Scotland voting for independence now given the historical links with rUK.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -

Fraser spent a lot of time and effort proving that the USA is the biggest export market for both rUK and Scotland the UK as a whole in fact. But readily admits that Scotland is a significant export destination for England/rUKBut biggest export market or second biggest export market, doesn’t the point remain..
...Worth noting that ESS does not include oil and gas exports
And at the end of the day like I said Scotland's exports are up across all markets and Scotland is in trade surplus which is great news. For anyone interested in reading the blog the comments on this entry are worth reading too.
