If it's all plain sailing though, why did I only get $1.20-1.25 on my recent trip to the US instead of $1.60? And why is the PM talking of avoiding cliffs?
    ...

I bet the biggest risk is political pride, on both sides.

Politicians will seize an opportunity to talk tough, especially when they have elections back home. Putting their career first, where have we heard that before!

If you left it to civil service types and business people, they would just get on with the hard grind associated with defining a new workable relationship.

We could see politicians on both sides swinging from fairly aggressive statements, back to more concilliatory tones.

I'm never sure whether some of the European politicians speak on behalf of the EU, or their own government. Will Merkel be steering Tusk and co.?

It projects about the same amount as France, if you consider that France's much larger standing army is mostly not very combat ready, and that the perennially broken down General De Gaulle isn't much better than the no aircraft carriers we have in service.

Of the two aircraft carriers you are excited about, only one will ever see service and we'll have to buy American planes for the other. Although thanks to Brexit thats looking like a couple of cessnas loaded with hand grenades now.

Neither country's military, or even both together, will be keeping Putin awake at night. This continues to be the first period in history where none of the European powers, including Britain, would be capable of dealing with an invasion from Russia, were it to ever come.

Yet another self loathing post from you dressed up as anti-Brexit rhetoric. You really have issues.
What keeps Putin awake at night is probably the thought of his country`s major cities ceasing to exist tout suite if he ever thought of invading a key NATO nation.

But we all know that wouldn't actually happen, especially now that Putin and Trump are buddies.

The only people who don't think our military is a laughing stock are those looking back with rose tinted glasses. And I say that as someone with friends and family serving/recently served. It's grossly mismanaged, underfunded and cut to the bone. We've got essentially no offensive capability without help from someone else.

Too much Russia today. What some people forget, is that there is one thing worse than western 'mainstream media' and that is Russian mainstream media or internet websites run by inexperienced teenagers purporting to know 'the truth' on everything.
Proudly voted remain. A global union of countries is the only way to commit global capital to the rule of law.

The entire GDP of Russia is less than Italy.

Putin would not have the resources to maintain a prolonged campaign.

Soft power is proving much more effective at spreading his influence, certainly in the West. It's also significantly cheaper.

How long have you ever seen Putin remain a 'buddy' with anyone ? He's KGB, a cold blooded licence to kill, killer. Probably a diagnosable pscychopath.

Trump is self evidently an ego maniac with a very short fuse.

This is not a marriage made in heaven

yes indeed, Putin's best allies are the 'stop the war coalition' and the labour party leadership and the equivalents elsewhere

If you think his is a marriage made in heaven I would suggest not utilising your matchmaking skills for close friends or family.

I didn't say it was a good thing, but Putin will be playing Trump like a puppet, and it's very likely he'll manage to get Trump to decide that the US shouldn't help NATO out in the event of a Russian invasion.
