Child Benefit & Child Maintenance

Student left school at 18 and started Uni in Sept 2015. (Living with parent) Maintenance is still being paid to the mother. Student now wants to leave Uni for another course.

If a Uni place is not available, and the student goes to college (aged 19.5).....

1. Could child benefit be re started
2. Would college course have to be paid for
3. Does child maintenance start again until 20

Thanks

Not sure, but it's amazing isn't it how a 20 year old MAN or WOMAN suddenly becomes classed as a child when benefits are involved
  • I agree! Let me also state, that I am neither the claimant or receiver of CM

Is this a private arrangement or court order for maintenance?
Child Maintenance would not normally be collected for a University Student

I am not sure whether Child Benefit can be restarted but to qualify for CB for college would depend on the level of course and that they are accepted before their 19th birthday

It's the level of the course being studied that matters, not whether they're at college or university doing it.

Will they be starting a new course straight away or will they have to wait until September when they'll be 20?
  • The college course is a level 3. Starts Sept 2016.

So on that basis, no fees are payable.?

Court border from 2006, states payable to 18.

then the order is surpassed by the remit of the child maintenance service (new version of CSA) because it is no long valid.. in 2006 it could only go up to 18 as education was unknown beyond that point.

Level 3 there should be no fees, and CB payable to 20th birthday.. what they are supposed to do then is anybodys guess!! My son is 20 on Friday doing full time college at level 3 and all money stops on Friday for him.. but he isn't eligible to claim anything at all .. so we go from about £200 a week to nothing overnight.. it is ridiculous.. we cant afford to eat as it is.

But recipients know that the gravy train stops at some point, how come no planning for this event in the past?
After all , FE is in the hope that better opportunities may arise from succesful qualification and experience.
  • So, my next question is.... If voluntary maintenance stops in April, presumably, it doesn't need to start until September 2016. (Leaves Uni after yr 1 in July)

Because the people who are SUPPOSED to know don't.. DWP, Connexions, college.. none of them know anything. It isn't in the 'parenting manual' they are born with, there is no info online.. nothing anywhere..
