I am currently with Santander and also have 2 ISA's with them, so I'm not sure how I will be able to move the money over from them once my current account is closed. I have sent messages to Santander on a few occasions but they don't seem to understand what I am asking!
Most ISAs allow you to link them to an account with another bank for withdrawals - so you may gain traction with customer services by asking them if you can change your linked current account.

So reading through this thread M&S are not the easiest bank to join but I'm after the 6% regular savings account. So this morning I've filled in the application form. Now need to wait for application forms through the post.

I'll need to create a donor account to be able to do the switching. Sounds like I can create one at Santander or Nationwide (where I have existing accounts) for that purpose.

See how it goes - this will be the first time I've used the switching services.

Update - Email from M&S asking me to call them.

I called this evening - had to clarify the source of funds that will be going into the account. I had answered that question as "transfers from other accounts". I had to repeat that and so that will information will go back to the applications team and they will let me know the outcome by email.

    See how that goes eh?

My switch to M&S completed today.

Only fly in the ointment was NCP telling me my DD for my season ticket failed when it's not even due until 12th (I suspect all they've had is a notification from M&S that my account has changed) and today, on receipt of my monthly season ticket invoice, they've added a £5 charge!! Cheeky much? Anyway if NCP refuse to pay that back, M&S will. I don't care that it's only a fiver, it's the principle.

Other than that, everything else has gone smoothly, all my DDs/SOs are present and correct and my account is up and running.

Turns out that NCP doesn't subscribe (or whatever it is they do) to the switching service. Neither I nor M&S apparently have any way of knowing that, so they saw the old bank account close and DD would consequently fail. M&S however can see it as a live DD. I've had to pay NCP by card this month and reinstate the DD over the phone for next month, when they will refund me the £5. I suggested they amend the wording of their letter to reflect the actual situation but suspect that won't happen as they seem to use the same letter for everything.

Another idea would be to open an a/c with a different provider eg TSB classic, or a classic +. Reason being you could then take advantage of 5% interest on the latter. No DDs needed but £500 per month which could just cycle round - of course it could also be a larger sum!

Just reread your post. Moving money? is that back and forth between a.n.other a/c & M&S? or is that getting money out of the ISAs? If that's a problem then yes, just open another Santander. Suspect many current accounts are paying a better rate than ISAs.

I did send a message to Santander to ask if I could open another current account with them once my existing account moves over to M&S, assuming they accept me! They said it's fine, which means I can then link my existing Fixed Term ISA, which matures in May this year, to my new account and just transfer £1,000 in and out of the M&S account every month.

I did get an email from M&S this morning to say they are considering my application, hope that is good news :D

Next step. email with "important information" about my application arrived today. Content said "We are still considering your application". So not much of importance really.

Just received the dreaded email from M&S informing me I've been refused. Slightly annoyed as I was gonna do the £220 on trifle.

Why is it so hard to join this bank? Thought it was just a rebadged HSBC account...
  • My application has been successful, which is a relief. I can't believe they are turning some people down, I wonder what their reasons are for that. I have a friend who hasn't worked for 30yrs, has only had a joint bank account with her husband and as she is soon going to be be getting her state pension she opened an M&S account. She went into a branch and got someone to help her fill the paperwork out and was accepted right away.

Well, our switch was completed 2 days ago and, so far, it has been a really smooth process. Setting the account up was very straightforward - none of the problems and delays others have reported. I guess there must be some logic as to why some people have more issues than others but I don't know what it is.
Just waiting for the M&S gift card now.
  • Do you get the £10 a month for the first 12 months only or is it an ongoing payment whilst you hold the account?
