I really struggle to keep my food shopping costs down when on SW. Currently spend an average of £90 a week for 2 adults and a 5 year old who has school meals. I bulk buy my meat from muscle foods which helps a bit and I buy a lot of my fruit frozen but I do find it difficult. On the plus side our eating out costs have dramatically reduced!

    Menu today was:

    B - 2 x hifi (heb) clementine
    L - subway salad (2)
    S - activia, kitkat (5.5)
D - gammon, steamed veg, skinny potato gratin (hea plus 3 syns), ff Greek yoghurt, cherries, meringues (3)

can anyone help me with the sysn of asda southern fried chicken steaks?

I am slowly catching up with the thread (gosh, isn't it busy - I am struggling to keep up!) so someone else may have already answered this, and even if not, it may be too late. But as far as I can make out from the app, they are 6.5 syns each. They are listed as Chosen By You.

ETA - yes, I can see, now that I've caught up, that I was way too late :D
  • Evening all;

not a fantastic day as I have come to expect from Saturdays - even more expected with OH's youngest brother coming round as he's even harder to feed than OH!

Breakfast: HeB bread with spread (2)
    lunch: salad - all free
evening: with youngest BiL round I was limited to what he'd eat so we've had pizza, garlic bread and chicken strips - like a DIY pizza hut. Not even considering syns; scratching it up and back on it tomorrow :)

    Tomorrow:
breakfast: Bacon and egg sandwich on HeB bread + 3? syns (not sure on exact amount slices from a normal loaf) all free :) will probably slice a tomato in to it too
lunch: salad: handful of pasta, spinach, little lettuce, tomato, cucumber, beetroot etc
tea: chicken and jacket potato with loads of veggies
    snacks: fruit
    drinks: tea/NAS squash

not much time for body magic but lots of walking round makro!

  • Hi all - had a good day today. I am so pleased that the good days are far outweighing the bad days. Something must have "clicked" in my mind.

I had brunch today - two poached eggs, two bacon medallions, baked beans and fried cherry tomatoes.

Dinner tonight was BBQ Bacon Wrapped Chicken, served with rice. Blooming lovely it was.

HEA was milk in tea, but as always, I struggled a bit with HEB (and syns). Just been reading a SW FB page, and someone posted a recipe for blueberry muffins made with oats, so I just made those. Unusual texture, but very nice. Will make those again for breakfasts, as I eat at work and I'm restricted in what I can have. I am getting a bit bored with Weetabix and raspberries or blueberries now, so the muffins will make a nice change.

On the subject of food bills. Oh my days. It's not cheap on SW, especially when I am the only one doing it. Spent £53 in Aldi today and have another £60 going on a click and collect order tomorrow. I actually could have bought more at Aldi, but I ran out of bag/trolley space. However, as MrT's price match Aldi, I don't suppose it would have made a lot of difference.

I have a weekly meal plan, and shopping list with everything that I've already got in, crossed off, so I know that I have only bought what I need. Plus a few "treats" for the family.

Cautiously optimistic about weigh in on Monday morning :)

Others have been doing very well - I hope to emulate.
  • A note on food bills I don't find mine to be significantly different to 'non-SW' eating; if anything they are probably slightly less - and that's even with OH's chocolate/crisps/camp snacks/fussiness!

I have a pretty standard breakfast (HeB cereal with milk from HeA and a banana or an omelette usually) and lunch on work days is always either a salad or a jacket potato with salad and a protein (beans, tuna or chicken) then tea I try and cook the same for all three of us as much as possible but do make some switches - when they have chips I'd have a jacket potato or salad for example.

I would say we buy more fresh fruit now and we eat a good variety however I'm a stickler for saving money so tend to try to shop around.

We had been bulk ordering meat from musclefood but I'm not doing that this quarter as I want to try some of the SW meats from Iceland and I'm buying chicken tomorrow from Makro.

I think I find it easier as I don't buy mullerlights for example unless on a truly unmissable offer

    Well done, musogirl.

Sorry, tweets, “craw” is a Scottish pronunciation of “crow”. To eat crow means to acknowledge that you made a mistake.

Mary - You can keep your food shopping lower by everyone eating the same thing rather than cooking different things for the family. There isn't anything on SW which isn't suitable for the rest of the family - except kids should have whole milk when they are younger.

I also cook quite a few dishes with pulses - one of our favourites being mixed bean goulash (a variation of a recipe from Jack Monroe's website); you can make it as spicy as you like or even leave the spices out if others don't like spicy foods, although a little spice makes it better.

Rice dishes like jambalaya, risotto etc are also quite cheap as the main ingredient is very cheap - I don't bother with long grain rice even though it's the cheapest; I tend to use mainly basmati or Arborio for risotto or paella.

Not sure if you are a group member but if you are have a look at some of the ideas on the sample menus online. You might get some ideas from those or from the magazine.

You could also just change things in your usual recipes to make them SW friendly - things like swapping oil for Frylight; leaving out cream and using quark, fromage frais or yoghurt to make something creamy (but only add yoghurt once something has finished cooking and stir through off the heat to stop it curdling.

Hope some of these ideas are helpful.
