P45 need to hide salary to date

Hi, I have just been offered a new job but I would prefer for my new employer not to know my previous salary (as i exaggerated my salary at my interview, in order to negotiate a decent salary at my new job ).

The problem is how can I avoid giving my p45 to my new employer? Can I send it directly to the tax office instead? Will the tax office still tell my new employer what my previous earnings were? And will I get hammered for emergency tax?

Hope u can help:money:

If you don't hand over the P45 then it's likely you won't pay the correct amount of tax for the year. You could be under or overpaid.

If you don't provide a P45 your new employer must complete a starter checklist. You'll be put on tax code 1060L M1/W1 meaning your pay will only be looked at each month rather than cumulative over the year until HMRC send your employer a new tax code.

HMRC don't disclose your pay details though.

Payroll probably won't care what the figures say, they'll simply just input them onto the system to ensure your tax is correct.

The new employer's payroll department won't have any interest in what you said at interview. All they need to know is how much has been earned in the current tax year and the amount of tax paid. The easiest way to do this is to give them your P45 and then you will be taxed properly from the outset.

P45 isn't evidence of salary anyway.

I could be on a salary of £60k per year, but end up only earning £50k in the year due to sickness or some agreed unpaid leave. Conversely, earnings on the P45 could be higher than salary because of overtime and/or bonuses.

Assuming the exaggeration you made wasn't too drastic, it will more than likely go unnoticed.

Fibbing in an interview is normally a terrible idea though, but that's just my opinion. I'd be constantly on edge waiting for them to somehow find out and show me the door.

If you decide that you do not want your new employer to see the P45 details, look on part 2 there used to be instructions what to do on that, proberbly still is.

You can fill in a P46 instead and claim you haven't recieved your p45 yet; however, when the tax office receive it they will send your figures to the new employer, along with the correct tax code, as they will need to be entered so that the P60 is correct in April 2016.

In reality, unless you are going to work for a tiny company, no one is likley to look/compare or care.

The P46 was replaced by the starter checklist I mentioned. Similar though.

I began employment with a very large multi-national and my P45 had to go via my line manager (a Financial Comptroller) who questioned me about the apparent discrepancy between the amount shown as pay on the P45 and what was mentioned during recruitment. I had to provide a explanation - he did care.

Did did exactly the same. P45 went direct to payroll, no one blinked. if they had, there was plenty of room for mentioning the notional cash value of employee benefits.

Have your current employer given their reference yet?

Is it a large company? If so it will just get passed to HR (Or you may be able to send it directly) their payroll people will deal with it and are unlikely to know what you said in an interview.

The other thing is that it is your previous years income. You could have had a payrise, taken 3 months off to go travelling etc etc. It just confirms what you earnt, not your actual wage.
