Hi, I have just been offered a new job but I would prefer for my new employer not to know my previous salary (as i exaggerated my salary at my interview, in order to negotiate a decent salary at my new job ).

The problem is how can I avoid giving my p45 to my new employer? Can I send it directly to the tax office instead? Will the tax office still tell my new employer what my previous earnings were? And will I get hammered for emergency tax?

    Hope u can help:money:

Next time you go for a job decline to answer the question. There is a correct way to answer the question without actually telling them how much you earned or by exaggerating how much you earned.

I wouldn't know the answer to that question anyway. I do a bit of part time self employed work every now and again with a few clients all of which are charged different rates.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • It's really rude of interviewers to ask someone how much they earn. I really don't understand why they possibly need to know this information.

I fully intend to fib if anyone is so rude as to ask me how much money I earn. I will inflate the figure in order the maximise income for myself.

  • If they question it (which is very unlikely) just say you paid a large percentage of your salary into your pension.

For goodness sake, I wouldn't dream of asking the interviewer how much they were paid, why is it ok for them to ask us?

It's quite telling that after lying to your employer to get money you wouldn't otherwise have got, you class someone who objects to you obtaining money by deception (which is a criminal offence, by the way) as a 'jobsworth'.

I hope your employer discovers this and fires you, my only regret is that you haven't left enough identifying information in your post that I could tell them myself.

Oh dear me such resentment because someone has got themselves a good job. Surely you aren't jealous to be spitting such bile and offering such bad will to a complete stranger !!

You must be a very lonely person.

You do know even CEOs of large corporates have been fired for lying about previous salaries, fake degrees, fake achievements on their CV's etc..

Why is it rude to ask the question?

A job interview isn't a social occasion with acquaintances, it's about work and that includes how much the work is worth.

Have you ever been involved in recruiting staff? Knowing how much someone has been paid for a role helps judge the level of responsibility involved when job titles can be inflated or mean very different things in different organisations. You admit you would "inflate the figure" to maximise your income so you do realise that it is part of the negotiation process.

Can you provide an example of this specific 'crime'?

It's not rude at all to ask someone's current salary. I've never had an interview where this hasn't been asked.
