"A 10 year old should not be using facebook anyway. 13 is also too young, imo, but at least it's not illegal."

Illegal? Under which law would that be, roughly?

Under the "Law" of Facebook itself: https://www.facebook.com/help/157793540954833
Facebook requires everyone to be at least 13 years old before they can create an account (in some jurisdictions, this age limit may be higher). Creating an account with false info is a violation of our terms. This includes accounts registered on the behalf of someone under 13.

The age restriction has to do with COPPA (The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) which is American law, and all those social media companies (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) are based in the US.

I have found that when I was on Facebook a majority of my 'friends' were people I really could not stand but I was friends with them because they knew a mutual friend of mine if that makes sense.
    .

It doesn't really make sense as you are only friends with people you choose to add.

Some people feel they *should* have lots of friends and don't cull the ones they aren't interested in so end up with a lot of tripe.

Nothing wrong with having lots of aquaintances on FB but there's nothing to say you can't be more selective -it's personal choice.

She is hard work. I felt like I was walking on eggshells a lot of the time. I was trying to keep friendly because the boys get on so well. My 10 year old is really sad about it, but I have said to him to remain friendly and that I don't have an issue in them remaining friends. However, don't know if that will work the other way round.

They're training tomorrow, so will see what happens then.

She's not really a friend then - just one of the other Mums at the boy's club.
She'll find someone else to be offended with soon enough- Drama Lamas always do !

  • I recommend using Facebook the way I do:

I log on once a year, the day after my birthday, and say "Thanks everyone!" To those that wished me a happy birthday.

Then I log off for another year.
  • My experience of FB seems very different from everyone else's here - I don't see any drama at all. I'm in a few special interest groups - an actor, The Archers, various authors. Plus I post a lot about what films I'm seeing and books I'm reading and this leads to all sorts of interesting conversations. Yes, I also post pictures of food - leads to chat about recipes, or my holidays and my friends do the same but we seem to manage without any drama though there can be the occasional spat about politics. Just as in Real Life. Funny how the people who dismiss it are the people who don't actually use it.

The ten year old isn't.. but I'm afraid I've got no time for parents who allow their children to use the internet unsupervised, and that includes going on FaceBook illegally.

There are much worse things that kids can get up to than going on FB "illegally". Getting involved in drugs and petty crime come to mind and you don't need FB or the internet for that. You will find that a lot of parents are aware of their kids' FB accounts and are happy with them. That means they are supervising them while they do something rather than banning them from doing it which is a much more constructive approach.

I was a kid in the 'dark ages' but, unlike many older people, I still remember very clearly what it felt like to be an 'inbetweener' and a teenager, and I can tell you if FB had been around at the time and I hadn't been allowed to join till I was 13, I'd have found a way to join, just for the heck of it. In fact, I started smoking at 11-12 and didn't enjoy it, however, I did it only because I wasn't supposed to. :D
When I turned 16 and I could smoke in front of mum and mum's friends, it lost its attraction and I only smoked when I was with my friends and everyone lit up, I never got hooked and stopped smoking completely at 21 when I no longer saw any point. :A

The more something is forbidden, the more attractive it becomes. :snow_laug
