Doesn't look like it (for most people), a bitter 0.25% interest and free CHAPS/Wire transfers. I'm sure there are other normal current accounts with better offers unless of course you transfer abroad a lot. FlexPlus from Nationwide is one heck of a account for £10/mo.

I have HSBC Premier cards, and use Transferwise for international payments, both personal and business totalling about 40 a month.

I know the best rates are elsewhere, but I'm happy with the service HSBC offer, especially with the business accounts.

It's not a gift it's just part of the service, and they still do.

I really don't see the point, but there we are.

I worked in retail for a while and I've seen a fair few Coutts cards which used to impress me I have to say.
I can't say I'm keen on the fact banks like to announce in large letters on their cards when you have a basic account. To me it screams ' I can't have a real account' luckily I have a 'normal' Lloyds card now although my Nationwide FlexBasic has 'FlexBasic' in big letters on it :D I am a card snob I don't mind admitting :D I've got a personalised card on my Barclays Basic account as well.

The best designed card to me by none was the Abbey National Multifunction Card back in the days when Santander was not Santander.

I think back in the design debit cards were still a new fangled thing and it also had the lovely £100 cheque guarantee logo on it. The design seemed to be based around the fractal pattern on the cheque book.

You can see the card in the photo on this Abbey National literature I posted some time ago next to an old Abbey cheque.

They also did a similarly nicely designed 50 and 100 £ cheque guarantee card for those who didn't meet the strict criteria for the debit card.

I left this bank when it became Santander.

  • Oh yes, that's an interesting one. When the massive Delta logo was on the card as well as the VISA logo! I had a TSB Visa Delta.

Nope, I still don't get it.
  • anoncol, some of us are geeks with this type of thing and its good fun to talk about it. we are bankies - fans of bank bits n pieces.
  • I still like the design of my Coventry Building Society visa debit card. But it is not as nice as the original one which had a watery scene on the front and the magnetic stripe on the back was a long hologram animation of a swan taking off
  • I still have it in the bureau as it was quite unusual. Not sure how many banks adopted an animated hologram magnetic strip

I've had other cards with that 'World' logo on (capital one for starters) so I suspect it's actually some sort of MasterCard designation?

Yep, it's a 'premium' MasterCard product, which retailers pay a higher rate of interchange on (not any more) than a standard MC. It pays (paid) for the benefit of the card, eg the cashback offered by Capital One Aspire World, Egg Money, Barclaycard World cards.

Similar to Visa Infinite or Visa Signature (neither of which I believe are issued in the UK?).

On the 'posh' card subject, I still think the classic Amex design (Green, Gold, Platinum & Centurion charge cards) is pretty smart :)
  • out of interest does anyone have a picture of the Barclays Premier Debit card?
