  • Banks don't seem to care that much about giving us gold cards, etc. any more and I guess with more online payments, Apple Pay etc it'll become less relevant.

I think my Nationwide FlexPlus debit card looks nice and that's just a packaged account, nothing special.

I have this card. I do get quite a few comments.
  • God knows how you get that Santander GOLD account.

A relative has loads of money saved with Santander, he asked they knew nothing about it.

The gold debit card is for "select" customers. We moved lots of money around when the father-in-law died so Santander thought we were wealthy & made us "Select". It just means you get regular phone calls asking you to come in for some advice, which I decline politely.

Santander staff knowing nothing about their services is not unusual.

    The criteria
    "

To join Santander Select you must have a current account with Santander and meet one of the following criteria:

    • Pay your main income of at least £5,000 per month into a Santander current account (excluding transfers from other Santander accounts), or
    • Maintain £75,000 in any Santander investment(s), savings or current account; or
    • Have a property worth at least £500,000 with a Santander mortgage "

It is by invitation only, ie you can't apply for it and even if you make the criteria there is no guarantee of an upgrade. Since you are unable to make an application it is of little surprise the branch staff are unable to help.
  • That explains it, cheers.

I have been a Select customer for almost 4 years now. With 4 123 accounts, co-incidentally.Which is as many Santander accounts I'd ever have, given the FSCS max.

I have never figured out what made them "bestow" Select onto me, and I have never received one single phone call from Santander in all those years. May be it's because I ticked "no marketing" or whatever in the application. If you missed that tick field (easily done), you can modify the Marketing preferences online I am sure.

Is that account actually worth the £10 monthly fee?

Doesn't look like it (for most people), a bitter 0.25% interest and free CHAPS/Wire transfers. I'm sure there are other normal current accounts with better offers unless of course you transfer abroad a lot. FlexPlus from Nationwide is one heck of a account for £10/mo.

£120 a year to have Zebra on your debit card!

I tend to find the "exras" that some with these fee paying accounts are never worth it for me. I can't remember the last time I went abroad so have no need for travel insurance and commission free travel money, nor mobile phone insurance, I get breakdown cover included in Motability.

Best Current Account I ever had was Coventry First (now been done away with) when it paid about 4.7% on balances upto 250,000. That was in about 2006. That value has dwindled down to near nothing now and new accounts can't be opened since 4 December this year. Not sure if the Cov will come up with a different variation any time soon.

It still seems more a borrowers market than a savers. Flex Direct is a bit naff as the rate ends after 12 months.
